Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which oil company used the advertising slogan "Put a tiger in your tank"?

Answer: Esso

In 1959 young copywriter Emery Smith was given the task of creating a headline banner that would help boost the sales of Esso Extra. He was aware that the tiger had been used as a symbol by Esso since the early part of the twentieth century, originally appearing in Norway, and used this as his inspiration. In 1964 McCann Erickson used that slogan and a cartoon like character that looked very much like Tigger from the "Winnie-the-Pooh" stories to create one of the most famous advertising campaigns of that decade. The sales of Esso soared so dramatically that Time Magazine declared 1964 as "The Year of the Tiger".

Esso, whose acronym stands for Eastern States Standard Oil, was founded in 1906 and is a trading name for the Exxon Mobil Corporation. Exxon Mobil contribute a million dollars a year to the "Save the Tiger" fund, which works towards saving the last of Asia's wild tigers.

This question roared into existence from the paws of Phoenix Rising's pollucci19.
2. In the comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes" by Bill Watterson, which one is the tiger?

Answer: Hobbes

Hobbes is delivered to the reader in two formats; purely as a stuffed tiger, which is how everyone else in the strip, apart from Calvin, see him and, as a live creature who is Calvin's best friend. There is a view that the live version of the tiger represents Calvin's conscience because he seems to be the reasoning force who always provides the young man with the obvious faults or likely downfalls of any venture that Calvin puts forward. Add to that he was named after the famous philosopher, Thomas Hobbes.

"Calvin and Hobbes" was launched in November of 1985. Cartoonist Bill Watterson retired his creation ten years later, citing that he'd achieved all that he'd set out to do with his creation in this medium.

This question was put forward by pollucci19, a Phoenix Rising team member who has long been an avid reader of the strip.
3. According to a Chinese folk remedy, writing the Chinese character for tiger on the afflicted person cures which glandular ailment?

Answer: Mumps

In days gone past, mumps was called "Pig Head Skin" in Mandarin. People believed that a tiger would chase away the pig, so they would dip a brush in blue ink and write the Chinese character for tiger on the swollen flesh. The ink used was indigo and the person administering the treatment should be one who was born in the year of the tiger. One variation of this remedy is to use washing blue for the ink.

Mumps is a highly contagious disease and it is recommended that you see a doctor for treatment.

This question was written in blue by Phoenix Rising team member purelyqing, who was not born in the year of the tiger and does not advocate this remedy for treating mumps.
4. Tiger Tanaka is a key character in the 1967 James Bond film "You Only Live Twice"; is he one of Bond's allies?

Answer: Yes

Portrayed by Japanese actor Tetsuro Tamba, Tanaka is in charge of the Japanese Secret Service and also runs a Ninjutsu training school. His life is in constant peril and, as a result, his operation is located on a train that is constantly moving through the subways of Tokyo. He and Bond hit it off well together and that may be because, in his downtime, Tanaka matches it with Bond when it comes to the art of drinking and pursuing women.

"You Only Live Twice" was the fifth film in the James Bond series to reach the big screen and it had Sean Connery at the helm as Bond.

This question was only written once (honest) by Phoenix Rising's cool cat (at least he thinks he is) pollucci19.
5. In the novel, "The Life of Pi", a tiger is a central figure in the plot. What is its name?

Answer: Richard Parker

In Yann Martel's 2001 novel, we are presented with a young man Pi who was shipwrecked with a few of the animals his family was transporting from India to a new home and zoo in Canada (or are we?). Our narrator, in this tale, seems to be unreliable and, as a consequence, things may not always be as they are appear. Nevertheless, the tiger's name is Richard Parker, which was the name of the hunter that originally captured the tiger but, in the paper work, the hunter's and the tiger's names were transposed. The original name for the tiger was Thirsty.

This question was dreamed up by Sir Cumference... no, not really, it was Phoenix Rising's 1nn1.
6. Australian cricketer William "Tiger" O'Reilly was Wisden's Cricketer of the Year in 1935. What was his particular skill that earned him a place in the Australian team?

Answer: Bowling

Tiger O'Reilly was famous for his deceptive bowling. He ran in with the speed of a medium pace bowler, but his deliveries were of the slightly slower spin variety. He had an unorthodox method of holding the ball and begrudged the batsman any runs. In fact, it is said that his rather terse demeanour when the batsman took a run off his bowling led to his nickname, Tiger. His figures were extraordinary, taking 774 wickets at an average of 16.60. He played 27 Test matches over 18 seasons, with 19 of those test against England in Ashes series.

Phoenix Rising's VegemiteKid spun her own web of intrigue in delivering this question to you.
7. In the original "Jungle Book" stories by Rudyard Kipling, is the tiger, Shere Khan, killed?

Answer: Yes

"The Jungle Book" is a collection of stories written by Rudyard Kipling and published in 1894.

In the first story "Mowgli's Brothers" we hear of Shere Khan and his liking for hunting humans. This causes a small boy to be separated from his parents. The tiger hears of this and goes stalking his prey only to find that he has been frustrated by the wolf pack controlled by Akela. They have adopted the boy and named him Mowgli. Khan swears that he will, one day, kill the boy.

In the short story "Tiger! Tiger!", the third in the book, Mowgli is taken into the human village where he is adopted by Messua (and her husband), who believes Mowgli to be a long lost son. Shere Khan is still determined to get at Mowgli and sets out to stalk the village, where Mowgli now has the job of herding buffalo. Mowgli, however, is warned by the wolf Grey Brother. With the wolves' help he manoeuvres Khan into a canyon and, when the tiger falls asleep, Mowgli stampedes the buffalo through the canyon, killing the tiger.

Phoenix Rising's pollucci19 roller-skated through a buffalo herd to bring you this question. All of that was true apart from the roller-skating through the buffalo herd bit.
8. What links the Sailor Moon SuperS anime and a chatoyant gemstone?

Answer: Tiger's Eye

In anime, Tiger's Eye is one of the Amazon Trio, who were originally animals but were turned into humans by Zirconia. They were given the task of capturing Pegasus by looking at the "dream mirror" of their victims to see if Pegasus was there.

The tiger's eye gemstone is one of the quartz group, and is golden brown in colour, with the fibrous stripe that gives it the chatoyant (cat's eye) effect. As it is opaque, it is usually shaped as a cabochon (a gem that has not been faceted) and polished, enhancing its silky lustre.

This information was stared down by Phoenix Rising's VegemiteKid before being turned into this question.
9. Which "Great German Engineer" and founder of an automotive manufacturer specializing in high-performance vehicles, was involved in the production of the Tiger heavy tank deployed during World War II?

Answer: Ferdinand Porsche

Among other contributions, Ferdinand Porsche is credited with creation of the first hybrid vehicle (The Lohner-Porsche Mixed Hybrid) as well as the famous Volkswagen Beetle. He received the moniker "Great German Engineer" from officials in the Nazi Party, of which he was a member. He contributed to the production of several advanced German tanks including the Tiger I and Tiger II (or Tiger B). The Tiger I was deployed in Africa and Europe and the Tiger II during the Allied invasion of Normandy.

This question was manufactured by Phoenix Rising team member JCSon.
10. The title of Anthony Burgess's first novel "Time for a Tiger" was taken from which product?

Answer: Tiger Beer

Tiger beer is a 5% abv (alcohol by volume) pale lager that is brewed in Singapore. It was launched in 1932 by Malayan Breweries Limited, a brewery company that has since undergone a couple of mergers and name changes. The beer's slogan is "It's Time for a Tiger". Anthony Burgess, the author of "A Clockwork Orange", lived for a time in nearby Malaya and named the first book in his trilogy "The Long Day Wanes" after the popular beer's slogan.

This question was brewed by Phoenix Rising team member purelyqing.
