Thematic Big Cats Trivia Questions

1. In Rudyard Kipling's "Jungle Book" (1894) and the Disney motion pictures which followed, what is the name of the Bengal tiger intent on killing Mowgli?

From Quiz
Tigers That Never Really Were

Answer: Shere Khan

Shere Khan is a Bengal tiger who, despite a crippling injury to his leg, thinks himself to be the king of the jungle. He is motivated by jealousy and hatred of the man cub, Mowgli, and seeks to kill him. In Disney's original adaptation of "Jungle Book" (1967), Shere Khan was voiced malevolently by George Sanders, the "ne plus ultra" of those who have voiced this character.

2. LITERATURE: which Anglo-Indian author created Shere Khan, a terrifying tiger with a fear of fire?

From Quiz That's What Tiggers Do Best (2)

Answer: Rudyard Kipling

The tiger Shere Khan is one of the bad guys of Rudyard Kipling's 'Jungle Book' stories. He has a damaged leg, and is hated and feared by all except Tabaqui, his jackal sidekick. He becomes obsessed with Mowgli, the 'man cub', in 'Mowgli's Brothers' after he tries and fails to hunt Mowgli's parents, and Mowgli strays into the jungle and is adopted by Akela and his wolf pack. Local villagers in 'Tiger! Tiger!' believe that Shere Khan is an injured moneylender reincarnated, and there is a massive price on his head. He is afraid of fire, which he calls the 'red flower', after Mowgli chases him away with a burning branch. While he is burned to death in the Disney movie, in the books, he is trampled to death by a herd of buffalo. He was voiced by George Sanders in the 1967 Disney animated film, and Idris Elba in the 2016 live action/CGI film.

3. ANIMALS: how long is the gestational period of a Siberian tiger?

From Quiz That's What Tiggers Do Best (1)

Answer: 3-3.5 months

The female Siberian tiger gives birth to litters of two to four cubs on average, though some litters can contain as many as six cubs. The cubs are born blind and are the size of an average pet cat. The mating season is usually between December and January, although they have been known to mate at other times of the year, and the female attracts the attention of the male by scratching and urinating on trees.

4. Which tiger has been the face of Frosties breakfast cereal (Frosted Flakes in North America) since 1952?

From Quiz Tyger Tyger Burning Bright

Answer: Tony

The animation team behind Tony also designed the Jolly Green Giant as well as another Kellogg's breakfast icon, the trio of elves that are Snap, Crackle and Pop. Tony's famous catchphrase of "They're grrrrreat!" was voiced by Thurl Ravenscroft who was best known for singing the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" in the Chuck Jones TV movie, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" (1966).

5. Which oil company used the advertising slogan "Put a tiger in your tank"?

From Quiz Torched By a Tiger

Answer: Esso

In 1959 young copywriter Emery Smith was given the task of creating a headline banner that would help boost the sales of Esso Extra. He was aware that the tiger had been used as a symbol by Esso since the early part of the twentieth century, originally appearing in Norway, and used this as his inspiration. In 1964 McCann Erickson used that slogan and a cartoon like character that looked very much like Tigger from the "Winnie-the-Pooh" stories to create one of the most famous advertising campaigns of that decade. The sales of Esso soared so dramatically that Time Magazine declared 1964 as "The Year of the Tiger". Esso, whose acronym stands for Eastern States Standard Oil, was founded in 1906 and is a trading name for the Exxon Mobil Corporation. Exxon Mobil contribute a million dollars a year to the "Save the Tiger" fund, which works towards saving the last of Asia's wild tigers. This question roared into existence from the paws of Phoenix Rising's pollucci19.

6. "The truth is like a lion; you don't have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself." This quote has often been attributed (probably erroneously) to which person, who also has an animal in his name?

From Quiz Truth Be Told, I'm Lion!

Answer: Augustine of Hippo

While there are multiple memes and quotation websites that attribute this quote to Augustine of Hippo (also known as St. Augustine), no one can seem to find it in any of his multiple writings. Instead, the quote appears to be a paraphrase of one by an English Particular Baptist preacher named Charles Spurgeon: "The Word of God is like a lion. You don't have to defend a lion. All you have to do is let the lion loose, and the lion will defend itself."

7. The original title for the song commonly known as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is "Mbube", which means "lion". What language does the word come from?

Thurl Ravenscroft voiced Tony for many years. After Ravenscroft's death in 2005, there have been several substitutions. Kellogg has had recourse to the courts on several occasions to protect its distinct spokestiger from usurpers such as Exxon Oil ("put a tiger in your tank") and the 1988 Summer Olympics in South Korea mascot (Hodori).

12. MOVIE: the 2012 film 'Life of Pi', based on the book by Yann Martell, featured a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker. Who directed the film?

From Quiz That's What Tiggers Do Best (2)

Answer: Ang Lee

'The Life of Pi' stars Suraj Sharma as Piscine Molitor Patel, or 'Pi' for short, who finds himself stranded in a lifeboat with a tiger called Richard Parker. Pi's parents own a zoo and Richard Parker is one of the animals there, whom Pi befriends, to his father's disgust. The family and their animals travel to Canada but the ship is lost in a storm, with only Pi and a few animals - Richard Parker, a hyena, a zebra and an orangutan - surviving, although the other animals kill each other. It is uncertain how true Pi's story is and both the book and film leave it ambiguous. The film won Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

13. BRAIN TEASERS: 'bangle' is an anagram of which species of tiger?

From Quiz That's What Tiggers Do Best (1)

Answer: bengal

They get their name from the Bengal tiger, a subspecies of tiger native to the Indian subcontinent. It is the national animal of both India and Bangladesh, and can also be found in Myanmar, Bhutan and Nepal. Some of South Asia's most notorious man-eating tigers, such as the Champawat Tiger, the Thak man-eater and the Tigers of Chowgarh (all of whom lived on the Nepal/India border) have been Bengal tigers. It should be noted, however, that humans are not tigers' primary food source and that their usual prey consists of animals such as wild boar, deer and grey langur monkeys.

15. In the comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes" by Bill Watterson, which one is the tiger?

From Quiz Torched By a Tiger

Answer: Hobbes

Hobbes is delivered to the reader in two formats; purely as a stuffed tiger, which is how everyone else in the strip, apart from Calvin, see him and, as a live creature who is Calvin's best friend. There is a view that the live version of the tiger represents Calvin's conscience because he seems to be the reasoning force who always provides the young man with the obvious faults or likely downfalls of any venture that Calvin puts forward. Add to that he was named after the famous philosopher, Thomas Hobbes. "Calvin and Hobbes" was launched in November of 1985. Cartoonist Bill Watterson retired his creation ten years later, citing that he'd achieved all that he'd set out to do with his creation in this medium. This question was put forward by pollucci19, a Phoenix Rising team member who has long been an avid reader of the strip.
