Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On United States roads, what is the solid white line on the right of the slowest lane called?

Answer: Fog line.

It keeps you in the lane during fog, I suppose.
2. What was the name of the RCA mascot dog?

Answer: Nipper.

Nipper was a fox terrier and was inspired by a painting called "His Master's Voice" by Francis Barraud. Interestingly the original painting included the casket of Barraud's brother, who had owned Nipper.

For example, in Spanish "barrio de los lupanares" is a red-light district.
4. Why are keyboard keys arranged the way they are instead of in alphabetical order?

Answer: To allow the maximum typing speed possible.

Original keyboards were in alphabetical order but the mechanical arms of the typewriting kept jamming. The current keyboard pattern was designed to prevent these mechanical conflicts, by placing commonly used letters at a greater distance from each other.
5. Which element is added to steel to make it stainless?

Answer: Chromium.

Actually, the chromium (as chromium oxide) is a coating on the surface of the steel.
6. Which three letters were the last to be used in the English alphabet?

Answer: Iraq.

The Iraqis claim he committed "suicide" by pumping four well-aimed shots into himself. What a guy!
9. When a ship rings "2 bells" what time is it?

Answer: 1:00, 5:00 or 9:00.

Wouldn't it be easier to just use a regular clock? Anyway, one bell is 12:30 p.m., two bells is 1:00 p.m., three bells is 1:30 p.m. etcetera every half hour until 8 bells indicates that it is 4:00 p.m. then we start all over again!

This use of bells for time keeping orginated when one of the ship's boys would have the duty of watching an hourglass taking half an hour and the turning it when the sand had run out. When he turned the glass, he struck the bell as a signal that he turned the hourglass. This evolved into the tradition of ringing the bells one through 8 through a four hour "watch".
