Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The birthday pair is off for some posh champagne and canapes at Buckingham Palace. Which guitarist opened a concert there by playing from the roof of the palace?

Answer: Brian May

In June 2002, a pop concert was held in the grounds of Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations. It opened in spectacular style with Brian May standing on top of the palace playing a guitar solo. This followed a classical concert held a couple of days earlier.

This was the first time that the grounds of Buckingham Palace had been used for such an event, and "The Party at The Palace" attracted television viewing figures of some 200 million worldwide.
2. Airmale is a keen sports fan, so we're taking him off to see something he might not otherwise watch. We're off to the Guards Club in Windsor Great Park. Which sport could we watch here?

Answer: Polo

At one stage, the prestigious Hurlingham Club was headquarters of the British Polo Association, but the polo fields were compulsorily purchased for housing and the headquarters went to the Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park. Polo has to be played with the mallet in the right hand, even if you are left-handed naturally.

This is for the safety of both horses and riders. Windsor Great Park is part of the Crown Estates. Prince Charles of the UK was a very keen polo player, and both his sons have also frequently played.
3. Angelic has gone to see something more feminine. She is looking at the fabulous Koh-I-Noor diamond. Where has she gone?

Answer: Tower of London

The Koh-I-Noor, which means "Mountain of Light" in Persian, forms part of the crown jewels which can be found in the Tower of London. Mounted in the platinum crown worn by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, at the 1937 coronation, it has been part of the crown jewels since 1877. Legend says that it can only be worn by a queen or queen consort. Bad luck is said to come to any man who wears it.
4. Both my teammates are now off to see Osborne House, the ruins of Carisbrook Castle, and possibly go sailing in the Solent. Where are they going?

Answer: Isle of Wight

They're off to the Isle of Wight. Situated in the Solent, the island is famous for Cowes Week, one of the biggest sailing regattas in the world. It is also the starting point for the Fastnet yacht race. Osborne House was a favourite retreat of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and King Charles I was imprisoned in Carisbrook Castle for a time.
5. Airmale is about to indulge some more sporting passion. In which part of the United Kingdom might he see a man throwing an object that looks like a telegraph pole?

Answer: Scotland

The sport is caber tossing and it forms part of the Highland Games held each summer at Braemar in Scotland. As well as Braemar, games are held in various other Scottish locations, as well as USA and Canada. They are a celebration of all things Celtic and include dance competitions, pipe bands and various crafts, as well as the traditional heavy throwing events.

The British royal family members are regular visitors to the highland games when spending time at Balmoral during the summer months.
6. Angelic has been going in the opposite direction. She is off to a glamorous day at the races. Which flat race meeting features the original "Ladies' Day"?

Answer: Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot dates back to 1711. Ladies' Day is the day when women dress to the nines. Inside the Royal Enclosure, a strict dress code is enforced. Ladies must wear a day dress with hat or fascinator and men must wear black or grey morning dress with top hat. Ladies are not allowed to show a bare midriff or shoulders and the dress must not be too short.

There are no rules about hats, and over the years some fabulous, as well as weird, creations have been seen.
7. Back together again, our birthday two are off for a tour of Sandringham, followed by a boat trip on The Broads. Which county are they going to?

Answer: Norfolk

Sandringham House was built in 1870 and has been a private home for the Royal family ever since. The gardens were first opened to the public in 1908, and Queen Elizabeth II opened the house to the public in 1977. It is open from April to October except for times when the Queen is in residence.

The Norfolk Broads are an extensive system of inland waterways and canals famous for wildlife and tranquility.
8. Angelic is off to Kent now to visit the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Which house is she visiting?

Answer: Hever Castle

Hever Castle in Kent was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Her father inherited it in 1505. In the late 1800s/early 1900s it was leased to various tenants and fell into a state of disrepair. In 1903 it was bought by William Astor who extensively and sympathetically restored it. It later became a conference centre, but the main castle and grounds are open to the public.
9. Airmale in the meantime is off to visit a battlefield where the last battle of the English Civil War took place. Where was this?

Answer: Worcester

The Battle of Worcester took place in September 1651, and the forces of King Charles II were overwhelmed by Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army. It led to the exile of Charles II, and England being a republic until the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
10. We hope Airmale and Angelic have enjoyed their birthday tour. This last treat is a visit to the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo. In this context, what is a tattoo?

Answer: Military Festival

The Edinburgh Tattoo is an entertainment featuring the Armed Forces, both from the UK and overseas. Marching demonstrations, motorcycle display teams, mock battles, dog display teams and more feature in this very popular event. It takes places in Edinburgh Castle each August and is usually on every night for around three weeks.
