Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Everyone knows that a Baker's dozen is thirteen. Which of the following is NOT another name for a Baker's dozen?

Answer: Kneader's dozen

Kneader's dozen is the only phrase of the four that is not a real synonym for Baker's dozen. The term Baker's dozen ironically dates back to the 13th century. It was an attempt by bakers to not violate the Assize of Bread and Ale statute which forbade shortchanging customers. To make sure they did not short a customer they would sell 13 for the price of 12 and so the tradition was born.
2. Wilt Chamberlain was a hall of fame basketball star who wore the number 13. He set numerous records in the NBA. Which of the following is NOT one of his nicknames?

Answer: Shortstuff

Shortstuff was never a nickname for Wilt Chamberlain. He stood 7 feet 1 inch tall and played center during his basketball career. Among the records he set, two are deserving of special mention: he was the first player in NBA history to average 40 and 50 points a game in a season and the first player ever to score more than 100 points in a single game.

He, too, has some irony involving the number 13 as he was selected to 13 All-Star Games. (source:wikipedia)
3. When Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon, he did so leading the 13th Legion. The 13th had a rather ferocious mascot. Which of these PRIDEful animals was its mascot?

Answer: Lion

The Lion was the mascot for the "Legio XIII", as it was known to the Romans. It played a key role in many of Rome's most famous battles both under Julius and for later Caesars.
4. The number thirteen also figures prominently in American history. Of the following, which one was NOT one of the original thirteen colonies of the United States?

Answer: Maine

New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia were all members of the original colonies. Maine was originally part of Massachusetts and only entered the Union as a separate entity in 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise. Along with the 13 stripes on the United States flag, the number 13 also figures prominently on the Great Seal of the United States. On the Obverse the bald eagle is holding 13 arrows in its left talon and on the Reverse the pyramid has 13 layers of bricks.
5. "Houston, we have a problem," is an oft cited but incorrect quotation of one of the Apollo 13 astronauts. Which one of the following was NOT one of the Apollo 13 astronauts?

Answer: Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks played Jim Lovell in the movie "Apollo 13", but was not one of the astronauts. The flight could have ended in tragedy when the accident occurred but became a triumph when the crew returned safely to Earth.
6. At age 13, Jewish boys celebrate their Bar Mitzvah. Is the Bar Mitzvah found in the Tanakh, the Jewish scriptures?

Answer: No

The Bar Mitzvah is part of Jewish tradition and is not found in the Jewish scriptures. There is no definitive date at which the ceremony became part of Jewish tradition, but it can be traced back as far as the Middle Ages. It may go back further but there is no clear record.

It is clear, however, that the tradition of a Jewish boy being responsible for fulfilling the requirements of the Torah at the age of 13 does go back much further.
7. In Christian tradition, who was considered the 13th apostle?

Answer: Paul

Paul was not one of the original twelve apostles appointed by Jesus, but his impact on the early church has led many to consider him the 13th apostle. Although chronologically you could say Matthias was the 13th, he was a replacement for Judas and is considered one of the twelve, not the 13th apostle.
8. The famous painting "The Last Supper" contains 13 people, traditionally Jesus and the Twelve Apostles. What book and subsequent movie of the same name does this painting figure prominently in?

Answer: "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown

"The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown was a bestseller that was turned into a movie of the same name starring Tom Hanks. It led to a sequel based on Brown's book, "Angels and Demons", which was actually written before "The Da Vinci Code" and its events take place first.
9. Future hall of fame quarterback Kurt Warner wears the number 13. Which NFL team was he with when they won Superbowl XXXIV?

Answer: Saint Louis Rams

Kurt Warner holds many NFL records. His road into the NFL was not an easy one, but he has proven that he belongs. Not only did he lead the Rams to two Superbowls, winning one of them, but he also led the Cardinals to a Superbowl appearance ten years after winning his first one. He has been named NFL MVP and Superbowl MVP.
10. The number 13 is considered lucky in this religion, the fifth largest organized religion in the world. Name this religion started by Guru Nanak.

Answer: Sikhism

Sikhism considers the number 13 lucky because of its relationship with the story of Guru Nanak. In Punjabi, 13 is the same as the word for "yours", which plays a major role in Nanak's understanding of God. All belongs to God, and when counting Nanak came to understand this because "yours" meant it belonged to God.
