Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paul Simon had a hit with a song with the number 50 in the title. Can you name it?

Answer: 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover

This 1975 tune by Simon was off the "Still Crazy After All These Years" album, and featured backup vocals by Valerie Simpson, Phoebe Snow, and Patti Austin. It became a number one charting hit on Billboard, and is Simon's biggest solo hit ever.
2. What can the term "fifty-fifty" mean?

Answer: all of these

The term "fifty-fifty" has many uses, and these three are all correct. Many charities run a "Fifty-Fifty" raffle to raise money. The idea is to collect as much as possible, with 50% of the total going to the winner, and the other 50% being kept by the charity. You'll usually find these at social events, such as PTA meetings, Lodge meetings etc.

The other uses mentioned are, any idea that has a 1 in 2 chance of being correct, or wrong, has a "fifty-fifty" chance. For example, when answering a true/false question, if you don't know the answer and have to guess, you have a fifty-fifty chance of being correct (or incorrect for that matter).

The Pakistani television show mentioned aired in the 1980s and was a very successful satirical sketch comedy show, that is considered one of the best shows ever produced in Pakistan.
3. Curtis James Jackson is a musician who is better known by this monetary name. What's the name?

Answer: Fifty Cent

Fifty Cent is the rap name Curtis chose for his persona. He broke onto the scene in 2003 with his "Get Rich Or Die Trying" album.
4. This 2008 motion picture is a crime thriller starring Ben Kingsley, Jim Sturgess, and Rose McGowan. Can you name it?

Answer: 50 Dead Men Walking

The film is a loose adaptation of a Martin McGartland autobiography of the same name. It chronicles an Irish Republican Army informant
(Sturgess), and his British handler (Kingsley). The film is set in the years 1987-1991, when McGartland was an actual informant within the I.R.A., before having his cover blown, and ultimately being kidnapped by the I.R.A. McGartland later escaped and went into hiding. At the time of the film's release, he was still in hiding.
5. Which state became the 50th to be admitted to the Union in the U.S.?

Answer: Hawaii

Hawaii was admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959, almost eight months later than Alaska which became the 49th state on January 3 of that same year. New Mexico and Arizona were states number 47 and 48. New Mexico was admitted on January 6, 1912, and Arizona on February 14, 1912.
6. The 50 caliber machine gun has two common names. What are they?

Answer: Both of these

Both are correct. This gun first appeared toward the end of World War I. It has been modified over time and is still in use by the U.S Military and many other NATO countries in the 2000s. It is a heavy duty machine gun that can be used against light armor military craft, including boats and low flying aircraft.
7. What date corresponds to the 50th day on the Gregorian calendar?

Answer: February 19

It's definitely not my birthday. Thirty one days in January means that the 19th day of February would be number 50.
8. Roman Numerals are capital letters which correspond to our modern day numbers, and can be written either individually or in combination to achieve the desired number. Which letter or letters would correspond to number 50?

Answer: L

Roman numerals originated in ancient Rome, and were modified in the Middle Ages to the system we use today. The basic numerals are I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50 C=100, D=500, and M =1000. Thus for the choices above, the numbers would be L=50, MD=1500, C=100, and VI=6. Roman numerals today are commonly used on some clocks and watches, as well as to designate certain sporting events. For example, the 2008 Superbowl which was "Superbowl 42", was designated as "Superbowl XLII" which taken as written, is 10 (X) from 50 (L), plus 2 (II). Roman numerals are also commonly used on the credits of movies to designate the year of production, as well as being used to differentiate members of the same family that have the same name such as a grandson being named "John Smith III".
9. In baseball there is a "50 Home Run Club" for players that have hit 50 or more home runs during a single season. Three players in history have done this 4 times. Who was the first player to accomplish this feat? (Hint: The Bambino)

Answer: Babe Ruth

In the 2008 baseball season, the club had 25 individual members who had accomplished this feat a total of 41 times. Ruth did it in four different seasons starting in 1920 with 54 home runs. He also did it in 1921 with 59 homers, hit 60 round trippers in his record setting 1927 season, and followed that with 54 more in 1928. McGwire also accomplished this feat between 1996 and 1999.

The other member of the club who has accomplished this was Sammy Sosa, in the years 1998-2001. Mickey Mantle only hit 50 or more homers twice, 1956, and again in 1961.

Interestingly, Barry Bonds has only hit more than 50 home runs in a season one time, and that was the single season mark of 73 which he hit in 2001.
10. "Book 'em Danno" was an oft used line from this highly successful police drama series of the 1970s. What show was it?

Answer: Hawaii Five-O

Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord), the head of Hawaii Five-O, the 50th state's elite police force, used this line many times to have his second in command Danny Williams (James MacArthur) make an arrest after solving the crimes of Hawaii. This crime drama ran from 1968 to 1980 on American television, and held the record for the longest running series of its kind until surpassed by "Law and Order" in 2003. Jack Lord passed away in 1998. James MacArthur was the son of "The First Lady Of The American Theater", Helen Hayes. MacArthur passed away in 2010.
