Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who sang about "The Man In The Mirror" on his 1987 "Bad" album?

Answer: Michael Jackson

"Man In The Mirror" was Jackson's fourth single from "Bad" and like the three previous releases ("I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel") it reached number one on the American charts. One of the songwriters for "Man In The Mirror" was Siedah Garrett, with whom Jackson performed the duet "I Just Can't Stop Loving You".
2. Who was the owner of the Daily Mirror newspaper, discovered drowned off the coast of the Canary Islands in 1991?

Answer: Robert Maxwell

Maxwell was born in Czechoslovakia as Ján Ludvík Hyman Binyamin Hoch and lost most of his family in Auschwitz concentration camp. He transferred from the Czech army to the North Staffordshire Regiment of the British Army in 1943 and served with distinction, winning a Military Cross in the process. He became a British subject in 1946 and changed his name in 1948.
3. In the 2001 movie "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", who was invited to look into the Mirror Of Galadriel, where he saw the Shire being destroyed?

Answer: Frodo Baggins

The Mirror Of Galadriel is a silver basin of water that could show the viewer "things that were, and things that are, and things that yet may be." In the book by J.R.R. Tolkien, both Frodo and Samwise Gamgee are invited by Galadriel to look into the mirror and while Sam sees a vision of Frodo asleep under a cliff, and of himself climbing an eternal stairway, Frodo sees a vision of a wizard who resembled Gandalf, but the figure was dressed in white and carried a white staff, so Frodo thought that it was Saruman instead.
4. In which fairy tale, from The Brothers Grimm, does the queen ask, "Magic mirror in my hand, who is the fairest in the land?"

Answer: Snow White

Thanks to Disney, we know the quote as "mirror mirror on the wall, who is fairest of them all" and the title of the piece as "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs". Also in the 1937 Disney movie, the queen orders the huntsman to kill Snow White and bring her heart back in a box as proof, whereas in the 1812 Grimm book, the queen orders the huntsman to return with Snow White's liver and lungs, which she then eats.
5. "I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions. Whatever I see I swallow immediately. Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.I am not cruel, only truthful" are the opening lines from the poem "Mirror", by which tragic American poet?

Answer: Sylvia Plath

Plath is best known for her style of poetry, often called confessional poetry, in which she wrote from a personal viewpoint about her clinical depression and suicide attempts. Her most famous works are "Tulips", "Daddy" and "Edge" which was written six days before she committed suicide aged just 30.

6. In which palace would we find the world famous Hall Of Mirrors?

Answer: The Palace of Versailles

During the time of King Louis XIV of France, mirrors were among the most expensive items that could be owned and that wealth was flaunted in this magnificent structure which houses 357 mirrors and was built between 1678 and 1684. The Hall of Mirrors was where the Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June 1919, ending the First World War.
7. "Big Rig" was reeled in in 2016 in Shropshire UK, weighing in at 71lb 4oz. What type of fish was "Big Rig"?

Answer: Mirror Carp

"Big Rig" broke the UK record for heaviest fish, but it was not recognised by the British Record Fish Committee (BRFC), because so many fish are imported and can not technically therefore be described as British, while others are deemed to be farmed, as they are fed to a certain weight and then placed in lakes for anglers to catch. Due to the uncertainty of "Big Rig's" origins, the catch was ignored by governing bodies but revered by anglers.
8. Which 15th century inventor, painter and sculptor famously wrote the majority of his personal notes in mirror writing?

Answer: Leonardo da Vinci

Da Vinci was well known for only using standard writing when he intended for his notes to be read by others, and could mirror write with ease. Historians have speculated that the reason for doing this may have been a method of reinforcement learning, as having to actively think about what one is writing, and then reading back helps with recall. Famously, the writings on da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man" are in mirror writing.
9. Who was the author of "The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side", featuring the wonderful Miss Marple?

Answer: Agatha Christie

"The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side" was published in 1962 and a movie version was made in 1980, with the shorter title of "The Mirror Crack'd", starring Angela Lansbury as Miss Marple and Pierce Brosnan, who appeared uncredited in his film debut.
10. Which hard rock band from New York released the 1979 album "Mirrors", featuring Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser on title track vocals?

Answer: Blue Oyster Cult

In my opinion, one of the greatest bands ever, BOC have been making music since 1972 when their debut album was released. The "Mirrors" album was not as well received as some of their earlier albums and caused the band to abandon the pop rock sound on this and return to their hard rock base.

A track on the album, "The Great Sun Jester" was based on Michael Moorcock's science fiction novel "The Fireclown" and was co-written by Moorcock.
