Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Each step, on a normal staircase, is made of two parts, but what are they called?

Answer: Tread and Riser

The tread is part of the step that you place your foot on and the riser is the vertical piece below it. In open stairs, the riser is omitted, leaving just the tread attached to a frame called a stringer.
2. Whose address was, "The cupboard under the stairs, 4, Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey?"

Answer: Harry Potter

Harry Potter, son of the late Lily and James Potter, lived here with his aunt and uncle, Petunia and Vernon Dursley, in the books by JK Rowling. His living conditions improved once the Dursleys found out that Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were aware of his home life.
3. "Stairway to Heaven" is one of Led Zeppelin's most famous songs, but which country singer recorded a cover of it on the 2002 album "Halos & Horns?"

Answer: Dolly Parton

Dolly is no stranger to cover versions having covered artists such as Collective Soul, Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi and Hannah Montana. Incidentally, "Stairway to Heaven" has twice been top ten in UK charts and both were covers. Rolf Harris took it to number seven in 1993 and Far Corporation went to number eight in 1985.

When the original by Led Zeppelin was finally released as a single in 2007, it peaked at number 37.
4. Moving staircases are escalators; in 1896, where was the world's first working escalator installed?

Answer: Coney Island, New York City

This escalator was the creation of Joseph Reno and was very basic by today's standards, consisting of a belt at a 25 degree angle with cast iron cleats attached for traction. It ran alongside the Old Iron Pier which was built in 1879.
5. "The People Under The Stairs" is a horror/comedy movie about a group of cannibalistic children that live, yup you guessed it, under the stairs. Which horror legend wrote and directed the movie?

Answer: Wes Craven

Craven is probably better known for his series of films such as "Scream", "The Hills Have Eyes" and "Nightmare On Elm Street" but this movie is certainly worth a look and also stars future "Pulp Fiction" actor Ving Rhames in one of his earliest roles.
6. Canary Wharf in London is well known as the finance and banking area of the capital, but how many escalators are there within the London Underground Canary Wharf station?

Answer: 20

Over 40 million people pass through this tube station every year, making it the busiest London Underground station that is served by a single line (the Jubilee Line.) For its grand opening in 1999, then mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, started an escalator and the station was also used as a setting in horror movie "28 Days Later."
7. Which official marathon course has 5164 staircase steps in its 26 mile, 385 yard length?

Answer: Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China marathon was first run in 1999 with just 350 competitors and is regarded as one of the sports toughest events. There is a ten hour time limit for competitors although the fittest runners manage to post times only about 20-30 minutes outside the times for a regular marathon.
8. What was the name of the Dutch artist that made the famous print "Ascending and Descending", which features a never ending staircase atop a house?

Answer: M.C. Escher

Escher also did prints called "Relativity" and "House of Stairs", both of which feature staircases as their primary object, and both of which, like "Ascending and Descending", I can stare at for hours.

Appel was a painter and sculptor whose best known piece is probably "Questioning Children" and Gilley is an American whose work is comparable with Escher's.
9. A famous staircase, attracting thousands of visitors each year are the 75 steps in Georgetown, Washington D.C. down which Father Karras fell to his death. Which movie are we talking about?

Answer: The Exorcist

Father Karras, played by Jason Miller, was the weak priest who in a moment of rage upon discovering his colleague was dead, angered the demon to such an extent it left Regan's (Linda Blair) body and entered his, allowing him to perform the ultimate act of self sacrifice and throw himself out of a window and down the steps.
10. There are multiple series of staircase locks on canals in UK and wherever there are staircase locks, you will find gongoozlers. What is a gongoozler?

Answer: An idle person who watches canal activity

According to Oxford English Dictionary, gongoozler is an early 20th century word, possibly originally from Lincolnshire, and is applied specifically to people who watch canal activity. It has now spread worldwide and there are many gongoozlers to be seen on the staircase lift on Three Gorges Dam in China.

A staircase lock is a series of locks for navigating a very steep incline, a famous example of which is the ten lock series at Foxton in Leicestershire.
