Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In games and past-times, how many squares are there on a standard Scrabble board?

Answer: 225

A Scrabble board consists of 15 rows and 15 columns (15 x 15 = 225 squares).
American architect Alfred Mosher Butts is credited with inventing the popular word game, which operated under various different names such as "Lexico", "Alph" and "Criss-Cross" before settling on the name "Scrabble".
2. Which popular Christmas carol contains the line: "Hosanna in Excelsis"?

Answer: Ding Dong Merrily on High

In 1924, British composer George Ratcliffe Woodward added lyrics to this popular Christmas carol. It first appeared without lyrics in the 16th-century.
3. If the temperature recorded on a Celsius scale is 0 degrees, then what would be the corresponding temperature on a Fahrenheit scale, given the same conditions?

Answer: 32 degrees

To convert Celsius/Centigrade to the Fahrenheit scale the formula is: multiply by nine, then divide by five, and finally add 32. Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit and freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
4. What is the largest marsupial in the world?

Answer: Red Kangaroo

The Red Kangaroo is the world's largest living marsupial, the male of which can grow as tall as 2m in height and 200lbs in weight. However, the female is not red in colour, but a blue-grey colour, which is why the females are often referred to in Australia as "blue fliers". A group of kangaroos is known as a mob, and the red kangaroo is a member of the family Macropus Rufus.
5. A spinet is an example of which type of musical instrument?

Answer: Piano

A spinet is a small keyboard instrument originating from the Renaissance period with a plucking action similar to that of a harpsichord. These pianos have the standard 88 keys, but the keys are shorter and therefore harder to play.
6. Which song from the 1941 Disney animation film "Pinocchio" won the Oscar for Best Original Song?

Answer: When You Wish Upon A Star

"When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are,
Anything your heart desires will come to you".
The song was sung by the character Jiminy Cricket and is one in a long list of Disney songs to have won the prize, with no fewer than 10 Disney films picking up the Oscar for Best Song.
7. A clumber is an example of which breed of dog?

Answer: Spaniel

The clumber is a relatively large breed of spaniel and a true specimen is always white with yellow-orange markings. Other varieties of spaniel include alpine, water, cocker, springer, field and King Charles to name a few.
8. "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again" is the opening line of which novel?

Answer: Rebecca

Daphne Du Maurier's novel is narrated by an unnamed character. She is the second wife of Maxim de Winter, who at the outset of the action is devastated from the death of his first wife Rebecca.
9. Which group had a hit in 1968 with the song "Born to Be Wild"?

Answer: Steppenwolf

The band derived its name from that of a novel with the same name by Hermann Hesse. "Born to Be Wild" was the band's third single released and reached number two in America's Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it the band's most successful song.
10. Ebony Starr is the middle name of which sporting figure?

Answer: Venus Williams

Venus Ebony Starr Williams was born in Lynwood, California in 1980. She is one of five sisters. I always find it interesting that the Wimbledon trophy which she has claimed on numerous occasions is aptly named the Venus Rosewater Dish, although the name long pre-dates Ms. Williams successes! Perhaps someday it will be re-named the Venus Williams trophy in her honour!
