Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before he was Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard on "NCIS", actor David McCallum wore the badge number 2 as secret agent Ilya Kuryakin on what 1960s TV drama?

Answer: The Man From U.N.C.L.E

All four programs first premiered in 1964. "The Man from U.N.C.L.E" followed two international spies (McCallum's character and the other portrayed by Robert Vaughan) working for a global counter-espionage unit called U.N.C.L.E. McCallum became a a heartthrob with his appearance - producers noted that he received the most fan mail of anybody on the show's cast. McCallum's character was shrouded in mystery and unknown, which built his appeal.
2. Which of these fun words to say out loud is similar to the meaning of "doubletalk"?

Answer: Gobbledygook

Doubletalk is defined as language that deceives or is deliberately unclear. It can mean the use of non sequitur words into speech to confuse those listening or to feign expertise or knowledge by the speaker. Comedians often include doubletalk in their routines or acts.
3. Which of these cities can be found in the second state admitted to the United States?

Answer: Philadelphia

Pennsylvania ratified the US Constitution on December 12, 1787 and became the second state to join the union, after Delaware. Delaware had become the first state to ratify it five days prior. The Constitution itself had been drafted in Philadelphia during intense debate in the summer of 1787 and required nine of the thirteen colonies to approve it to take effect.

It would be six months after Pennsylvania approved the constitution until New Hampshire became the ninth colony to sign on.
4. The first three numbers in what famous number sequence sum to 2?

Answer: Fibonacci numbers

The Fibonacci number sequence begins with 0 and 1, and following numbers are the sum of the two numbers prior. Leonardo of Pisa, known by his pen name Fibonacci, identified the sequence in the 13th century. The Fibonacci sequence surprisingly occurs abundantly in nature.

The number of spirals of bracts on a pinecone or a pineapple are always Fibonacci numbers, and the sequence appears in the arrangement of tree branches in some species, field daisy petals, and honeybee mating.
5. Before becoming a Canadian cultural icon for operating a chain of coffee shops, Tim Horton was a professional athlete. His #2 jersey was retired by what organization?

Answer: Buffalo Sabres

Horton made his NHL debut in 1950 and played 24 seasons in the NHL, much of it with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Horton wore #7 as a Maple Leaf but when he signed in Buffalo in 1972, he opted for the #2 as the #7 was already taken. Horton played his final 124 games as a Sabre until he died in a single vehicle crash while driving back from a game in Toronto in 1974. Ten years prior, Horton had opened his first coffee shop in Hamilton, Ontario.

The chain had expanded to 40 outlets by the time of Horton's passing and today there are close to 5000 Tim Horton's around the world.
6. The traditional second anniversary gift is cotton.

Answer: True

Cotton represents comfort and strength. It also is seen as a symbol of prosperity and durability. Some cotton anniversary gift options include towels or bathrobes, gloves, hammocks, or bedding.
7. What is the term for a research study in which neither the researchers or the subjects know who is in the experimental group and who is in the control group?

Answer: Double blind

In blinded experiments, information that may influence the participation or activity of the subjects is withheld for the duration of the study to reduce bias. Double blinded studies are essential to medicinal research and the development of treatment patterns.

A neutral party or researcher classifies the participants into either a control group or research group. One group undergoes the experimental treatment while the others receive a standard treatment or placebo. Researchers than monitor the reactions or responses amongst the two groups.
8. The Bard, William Shakespeare, wrote about the two Gentlemen of what Italian city?

Answer: Verona

"The Two Gentlemen of Verona" is one of Shakespeare's earliest plays and is one of the least performed works of the Bard. The two gentleman of Verona are the friends Proteus and Valentine, who leave Verona for Milan for most of the play and seek the love and affection of Silvia, the daughter of the Duke of Milan.

In the end Valentine wins the Duke of Milan's affection and Proteus rediscovers his first love, Julia, from Verona. Julia arrives in Milan in search of Proteus while in disguise as a man.

This was the first of many Shakespearean plays that include cross-dressing.
9. Which of these elements is not found in Group 2 of the Periodic Table?

Answer: Copper

Group 2 is the second column from the left of the periodic table. The complete list of Group 2 elements include beryllium (Be), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), and radium (Ra). The elements in this column are typically softer silver metals than Group 1 but the heavier elements can be as reactive as Group 1.
10. A 2011 countdown by Billboard magazine determined that this duet's "Endless Love", a soundtrack for the 1981 film of the same name, was the greatest duet of all-time.

Answer: Diana Ross & Lionel Ritchie

Each of those four duos made appearances in Billboard's ranking, which used a points system to determine the final rankings. "Endless Love" spent nine weeks at number one on the Billboard charts, the longest stay at the top of the chart for either Diana Ross or Lionel Ritchie in their careers.

The song was written and produced by Ritchie, and was the final number one for Ross in her career. Thirteen years later, a cover of the song from Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey nearly returned the song to the top spot on the Billboard charts; it peaked at number two.
