Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which of these popular British 'soaps' would you find the character Jason Grimshaw?

Answer: Coronation Street

Jason Grimshaw is played by actor Ryan Thomas, in the very popular soap 'Coronation Street'. In a recent storyline (Oct/Nov 2012) Jason is stunned to discover that his girlfriend Maria has finished with him in order to be with their mutual friend Marcus, who is (or was) gay. Coronation street was first broadcast in 1961, and has the distinction of being the longest running 'soap opera' in the world.

Another world record for the show is that the actor Bill Roach who plays Ken Barlow, was in the very first episode, and as at Feb 2013 is still playing the same character in the show after an incredible 51 years!
2. Which of these counties does NOT border Hampshire?

Answer: Suffolk

Hampshire is a county on the south coast of England, with Dorset and Wiltshire to the west, and Surrey to the east. The county of Suffolk is many miles to the northeast of Hampshire on the East coast of England.
Hampshire is well known known for being the 'Home' of the British army, as there is a concentration of army bases in the county, the biggest of which being Aldershot. The county also has some beautiful countryside, not least of all the New Forest, where deer can often be seen roaming wild.
3. The UK's currency was decimalised on 15th February 1971, but which new coin was issued long before decimalisation?

Answer: 50 pence / 10 shillings

The 50 pence coin was introduced in 1969 to replace the old brown 10 shilling note which eventually ceased to be legal tender on 22 Nov 1970. The original coin was quite large with a diameter of 30mm (1.18 inches). In 1997 a slightly smaller version was introduced with a diameter of 27.3mm (1.07 inches).
4. Which of these animals would you not find in the wild in UK?

Answer: Rattlesnake

Populations have dwindled over the years but there are still many deer to be found in several places in UK, especially Scotland and the New Forest in southern England. The same applies to badgers and foxes - loss of habitat is the main reason for their decline.

The UK does have an indigenous venomous snake - the adder, but if you see a rattlesnake in the wild, it has escaped from somewhere!
5. Who were the first to invade Britain?

Answer: The Romans

The first documented attempt by the Romans to invade Britain led by Caesar in August 55 BC failed due to bad weather, his second attempt in July 54 BC was successful. The Romans continued to invade Britain off and on for several centuries until they eventually left completely in 410 AD.

The first Viking attack on Britain was in 789 AD, and the first Norman conquest in 1066 is possibly the best known date in British history. As far as I am aware the Egyptians never got around to invading Britain.
6. Which British football team plays at Anfield?

Answer: Liverpool

Liverpool FC have played at Anfield since 1892. The ground was originally home to Everton FC from 1884 to 1892. A statue of former manager Bill Shankly can be found just outside the stadium.
7. Which two parts of UK are separated by the Bristol Channel?

Answer: England and South Wales

The Bristol Channel is at the mouth of the river Severn separating Wales and England. The channel is known for its tides, with a tide of over 50ft (15.25m) not being unusual. On the England side, the beach at Weston Super Mare is huge at low tide, and when the tide starts coming in it races across the beach.

Many people - myself included - have been caught unawares, and had to run as fast as they can to escape the incoming tide!
8. Which of these town/county pairings is correct?

Answer: Salisbury/Wiltshire

Salisbury is in Wiltshire, its magnificent cathedral has the tallest spire in the UK. Ipswich is in Suffolk; home to the landscape artist John Constable. Plymouth is in Devon; home to a large Naval base, and Colchester which is the oldest recorded town in UK, is in Essex.
9. Charles Dickens, the quintessential English author, was actually born in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Answer: False

It is of course false - Dickens was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, on 7 February 1812. He fathered 10 children and died of a stroke in 1870. As befits a man of his standing, he is buried in Westminster Abbey in London.
10. A person from Liverpool is often referred to as a _____ .

Answer: Scouser

A Liverpudlian would be most highly miffed if you addressed him as a Geordie, Brummy, or Taff! A Geordie could be from Newcastle, a Brummy would be from Birmingham, and a Taff is the common name for a Welshman.
