The Arbroath Smokie is haddock that has been smoked over hardwood.
2. "The Broons" is a comic strip beloved of generation after generation of Scots. In which Scottish city did it originate?

3. Where in Scotland will you find a statue of "Lobey Dosser"?

Answer: Glasgow

Sitting on Woodlands Road in Glasgow, this statue is a faithful reproduction of the cartoon character, "Lobey Dosser", the sheriff of Calton Creek. He sits astride his faithful two legged horse, "El Fideldo", which is also carrying Lobey Dosser's arch enemy, "Rank Badjin". The statue commemorates the work of the talented cartoonist, Bud Neill.
4. "Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain o' the pudding race!" To whom, or what, is the poem from which these lines come, addressed?

Answer: A haggis

Robert Burns' "Address to a Haggis" must rank among his best known poems, and is recited all over the world each year, at Burns Suppers, immediately after the haggis is "piped in" by a bagpiper in full highland regalia. They are generally held on 25 January each year, the date of Burns' birth but this is not strict.
A clootie dumpling, incidentally, is a pudding made in a cloth, or "cloot".
5. "Fingal's Cave" is a well known and well loved overture by Felix Mendelssohn, who is known to have visited the cave before composing his music. The piece is more properly called "The Hebridean Overture", a title which gives a clue to the cave's location. On which island of the Hebrides can it be found?

Answer: Staffa

The uninhabited island of Staffa is owned by The National Trust for Scotland and is a National Nature Reserve. It is best well known, however, as the site of Fingal's Cave, a stunning natural sea cave which the music evokes so well.
6. Although part of the United Kingdom, Scotland is a country in its own right, and actually has a kingdom within it. Where would that be?

Answer: Fife

The Kingdom of Fife is a region of Scotland, and is the ancestral home to Scottish monarchs and the home of Scotland's oldest university, St Andrews.
7. Scotland has a proud history of producing literary giants, people who are world famous for their prose or poetry. Which of these authors is not a Scot?

Answer: Kate Atkinson

Although she lives in Edinburgh, and has set several of her books in Scotland, Kate Atkinson was born in York.

8. It's known as the capital of The Highlands and is Scotland's first proclaimed city in the third millennium. Where is it?

Answer: Inverness

Inverness lies at the northern end of the Great Glen, and is a suitable starting point if you want to go monster hunting! Loch Ness of course. It became a city in celebration in 2001.
9. Scottish whisky, or "Scotch" is of course one of Scotland's biggest exports, if not the biggest. It is made in a highly diverse range of locations in Scotland, including many of the country's islands; but which of the following islands has distilleries producing Laphroaig, Bruichladdich and Bunnahabhain?

Answer: Islay

All of the islands mentioned have distilleries on them, but none as many as Islay.
10. If you're lucky, when touring Scotland, you might see a capercaillie. What is it?

Answer: A bird

The capercaillie is a huge woodland grouse that is close to extinction for the second time. It is also the name of a successful Scottish folk band. The wild cat mentioned in the incorrect answers exists and is also in danger of extinction, but is called simply the wild cat.
