Aged 44, Orwell was admitted to Hairmyres Hospital on Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) 1947 and began his treatment for TB. He remained in the hospital through part of 1948, changed 1948 to 1984 and the rest, as they say, is history.
7. Hunter House Museum in Calderwood, East Kilbride, was originally the home of which pair of medical pioneering brothers?

Answer: William Hunter and John Hunter

William and John Hunter were born and brought up in Long Calderwood which was originally a farm. William was given the post of physician to Queen Charlotte in 1764, and John was employed as surgeon to her husband, King George III, in 1776.

The Olympia in East Kilbride Town Centre was a great venue for gigs back in the day. However, latterly it evolved into a roller disco and eventually closed altogether in 1985.

Answer: Peter Manuel

Peter Manual, also known as "The beast of Birkenshaw", (after the Lanarkshire area where he lived) was working in East Kilbride at the time and was considered a strong suspect. However, despite having fresh scratches on his face, he was released from custody and consequently went on a killing spree.

He was eventually convicted of several murders and hanged at Glasgow's Barlinnie Prison on 11th July 1958. Annie was found near to the fifth tee on the course, however, the course itself has long since disappeared and homes have been built on the land as East Kilbride continues to grow and grow.
