Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these statements is actually true about the classic 1959 film "Ben Hur"?

Answer: An extra fell into the water during the shipwreck scene. They had added a chemical to the water to make it look blue, and the poor man turned blue for a week.

According the Internet Movie Database, MGM studios kept the blue man on the payroll until he returned to normal.

Shortly after the original 1926 film came out, people claimed that several extras, weighed down by their heavy armor, drowned in the shipwreck scene. The director callously refused to stop filming, claiming it would be cheaper to pay off their families than to reshoot the expensive scene.

My 10th grade social studies teacher claimed you could see a stuntman getting trampled to death during the chariot race. Allegedly, his family requested the filmmakers include this last stunt in the movie. Alas, this isn't true. The same legend is told about Brandon Lee in 'The Crow,' the girl in gold paint in 'Goldfinger,' and two child actors in 'Twilight Zone, the Movie.'

The story of the car parked in front of the Colosseum is persistent, but according to www.moviemistakes.com it is not true.
2. The 1987 movie 'Three Men and a Baby' would have faded into obscurity, had it not been for a persistent rumor. What can you supposedly see in one scene?

Answer: The ghost of a boy who died in a gun accident (as well as the gun).

In the scene where Ted Danson tries to convince his mother to take care of the baby, you can see a shadowy figure in the background. According to the rumor, it is the ghost of a boy who died in a gun accident in the apartment. Actually, the scene was filmed in a Toronto studio.

The figure is actually a cardboard cutout of Ted Danson (he played an actor in the film, and it was a prop for a commercial). The other three rumors I made up.
3. Let's have a look at 1939's 'The Wizard of Oz.' This film, I think, holds the record for rumors that turned out to be true. Can you find the urban legend among these true statements?

Answer: During the singing of 'We're off to See the Wizard,' you can see a lovesick Munchkin hang himself in the background.

No one hanged himself during the movie. What you're actually seeing is a large bird. For more information about the Floyd/Oz connection, check out http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032138/trivia
4. Let's take a moment to thank some of those silver screen stars. It's not easy to make it big. In fact, you'd be surprised at some of the things stars did to get their first break. Three of these statements are true. Which one is nothing but an urban legend?

Answer: Humphrey Bogart was the model for the famous Gerber baby from the babyfood jars.

Goldstein showed up for her audition as a space commando with heavy makeup and long hair, hoping to be cast as an illegal Mexican immigrant. Whoops! Tula Cossey, credited as 'girl at the pool' in 'For Your Eyes Only,' really is a transsexual. This was not discovered until after the film was released. Contrary to the rumor, however, she did not have a speaking roll in the 1981 film, and did not perform a love scene with Bond actor Roger Moore.

Stallone did star in the pornographic movie 'Party at Kitty and Stud's' in 1970. It was later rereleased at 'The Italian Stallion.' The Gerber baby rumor is famous, but untrue. Gerber baby foods were not released until 1928, when Bogart was nearly 30.
5. 'The Empire Strikes Back' (1980): I'll never forget everyone's surprise when we find out that Darth Vader is actually Luke Skywalker's father. George Lucas wanted to keep this a secret from everyone, including most of the cast and crew. When Skywalker accuses Vader of killing his father, what line was originally scripted?

Answer: Obi-Wan killed your father.

The line was actually recorded this way and was changed to the infamous 'I am your father,' in editing.
6. According to rumor, which actress' figure was the basis for Disney's Tinkerbell in 'Peter Pan'?

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

Tinkerbell was actually based on Margaret Kelly in the 1949 film.
7. When an actor makes a career with silly or lighthearted movies, it's often hard to take them seriously when they attempt to move into heavy genres. Pia Zadora, star of the 1981 movie 'Butterfly' is subject to a rumor along these lines. Zadora allegedly played the title role in a stage production of 'The Diary of Anne Frank.' According to the legend, what happened?

Answer: Zadora's acting was so terrible, that when the Nazi soldiers broke into the house, someone in the audience shouted 'She's in the attic!'

According to the rumor, the audience applauded the heckler. This story has also been told about Vanna White, Jenny McCarthy, and Pamela Anderson.
8. When Marisa Tomei won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the 1992 movie 'My Cousin Vinny,' people were shocked. Vanessa Redgrave was a shoo-in for 'Howard's End.' Not long after, a rumor began that Tomei did NOT win the Oscar; the presenter became flustered and just read the last name on the telepromter. Who was the presenter?

Answer: Jack Palance

Interesting, but not true. While Palance did seem a bit flustered during the presentation, he did read the right name. During every Academy Awards broadcast, two accountants from Price Waterhouse are stationed in the wings. If someone should screw up, they have instructions to go immediately onstage and make a correction.
9. According to one legend, a tornado demolished a drive-in theater during a screening of the movie 'Twister.' In the actual movie, a tornado does destroy a drive-in theater. What movie is playing during the movie tornado?

Answer: 'The Shining'

A tornado actually did damage an Ontario drive-in that was showing 'Twister,' but it happened during the day, when nothing was on.
10. When making movies that take place in the future, you run the risk of the film becoming outdated when the predictions fail to come true. 'Back to the Future II,' however, supposedly did predict a future event. According to the legend, what event did the 1989 film portray?

Answer: The outcome of the 1997 World Series

In 2015, time travelling teen Marty learns that the Cubs have won the World Series by defeating an unnamed Miami team. While there was no Miami team in 1989, that's the only correct prediction the movie made. The film mentions nothing about the Florida Marlin's 1997 series victory.
