The fleet consisted of two Royal Navy vessels, three store ships and six convict ships. The fleet left England for Rio de Janiero, then Capetown and arrived in Botany Bay 252 days later. 1420 people of men, women and children embarked on the voyage of which 789 were convicts.

There were three ships (Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria) when Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492 for the new land. There were 250 ships involved from Great Britain and Germany during the WWI "Battle of Jutland" in May/June 1916. The Second Fleet to Australia consisted of six ships (one Royal Navy escort, four convict and one supply ship) arriving in Sydney Cove in mid 1790.
