Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. That infamous Roseanne Barr performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" sets the bar for disrespectful renditions. At which team's baseball game on July 25, 1990 did she shriek, spit and grab her crotch?

Answer: San Diego Padres

Roseanne Barr completely botched the American national anthem at this game, starting off-key, singing too fast and then just bulldozing through the anthem with her fingers in her ears. When she finished singing, she spit on the ground and grabbed her crotch as the crowd booed loudly.

She had been asked to sing it by the team's owner at the time Tom Werner, who also produced "Roseanne." Barr can sing, she sang in her stand-up act and she has sung the anthem several times but this performance was awful and will be forever remembered as one of the most disrespectful renditions of "The Star-Spangled Banner" ever.

As a result of this, her cartoon show "Little Rosey" was cancelled, she was accosted and spit on by fans and called disgraceful by President Bush.
2. Not every woman can do this but this diva has one of the most widely praised performances of "The Star-Spangled Banner". She performed it at Super Bowl XXV in 1991; can you name her?

Answer: Whitney Houston

Houston performed this extremely patriotic version of the American national anthem at a time when tensions and emotions were high due to American participation in the Gulf War. Her rendition was well received and popular right from the get go and was released as a single, with all proceeds being donated to the American Red Cross Gulf Crisis Fund. Radio stations throughout the country played the song on the radio and Houston was named to the American Red Cross Board of Governors.

The single was re-released after the September 11 terrorist attacks and funds were donated to the New York Firefighters 9/11 Disaster Relief Fund and the New York Fraternal Order of Police.
3. This non-traditional, sultry version of the "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the 2018 NBA All-Star game did not hit the mark at all. Who later apologized for this performance?

Answer: Fergie

Fergie, formerly of the band The Black-Eyed Peas, sang a slowed down, sexy version of the US National Anthem and it was just plain weird. Watching the video of it, you can see the looks on the players faces as they're listening to it, that they're perplexed by this performance.

This wasn't the first time that Fergie has performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" though, she performed it in 2009 at the Easter Egg Hunt at the White House. That was a much more traditional version.
4. This is how you sing a national anthem, start it off respectfully and invite your home fans to sing along with you as Alessia Cara did while singing "O Canada" during game two of the 2019 NBA Finals. She was singing in Toronto; who were the Raptors playing against?

Answer: Golden State Warriors

Alessia Cara performed "O Canada" during game two of the NBA Finals, Toronto Raptors vs Golden State Warriors. Canadian fans have a reputation for singing loud and proud and Cara kept that tradition alive by singing a line here and there but inviting the fans to sing along with her, which they wholeheartedly did. Cara is a Brampton, Ontario singer/songwriter who started her own YouTube channel at the age of thirteen, performing covers.

Her debut single "Here" peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100.
5. This man is known as a nine-time Olympic Gold medalist, not a singer, so why did he take the mic to sing the US National Anthem at the start of a Chicago Bulls game in 1993? Can you name this track and field star?

Answer: Carl Lewis

In 1993, this unbelievably talented track and field star sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the start of an NBA Chicago Bulls game and it was a total disaster. Carl Lewis is not a singer, he couldn't hit any of the high notes and even apologized midway through the performance. I'm not sure why anyone thought this would be a good idea but it is a good lesson to stick with what you're good at. Lewis has won nine Olympic Gold medals, one Olympic Silver and ten World Championship medals, all for his track and field prowess, not for his vocal ability.
6. Beyoncé has two very memorable performances of the US National Anthem at high profile events, one is at Super Bowl XXXVIII back in 2004 and the other is at the second inauguration of this President. At whose inauguration did she deliver a classy and powerful performance?

Answer: President Obama

Beyoncé sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" in January 2013 for President Barack Obama's second inauguration and delivered a beautiful, traditional performance complete with her trademark runs and powerful vocals. She is a native of Houston, Texas and also sang the US National Anthem in Houston at the start of Super Bowl XXXVIII. Beyoncé is the first singer to debut at number one with her first six solo studio albums on the Billboard 200 and as of 2020 is the most nominated female performer at the Grammy Awards and has sold over 118 million records worldwide.
7. You need to know the words! Who is the crooner that was caught peeking at his hand for the lyrics while singing the US National Anthem at a 2003 baseball game in Boston?

Answer: Michael Bolton

Bolton was performing a traditional version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and all was going well until he had to take a pause and look at his hand for the lyrics. I mean, obviously this had happened during practice sessions of the anthem for him to have the lyrics he needed ready on his hand. Boston Red Sox fans were not kind, immediately breaking out in boos. Bolton tapped his head with his finger as if to signify that he knew he messed up and went on to hit the high notes with gusto.
8. Accompanied by a children's choir, Kelly Clarkson delivered a beautiful and emotional performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XLVI. On which singing competition television show did she get her big break?

Answer: American Idol

Kelly Clarkson rose to fame in 2002 when she became the very first winner on season one of "American Idol", the television show singing competition. She has gone on to win three Grammy Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, four American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and a Daytime Emmy Award.

In addition, she became the first artist ever to top Billboard's pop, adult contemporary, adult pop, country, and dance charts. Her rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was accompanied only by drums and the choir and was near perfection, in my opinion.
9. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith is known for his throaty, yelling style of singing and he brought that style and this instrument to his version of the US National Anthem at the 2001 Indy 500. What instrument did he open "The Star-Spangled Banner" with before tossing it away and start singing?

Answer: Harmonica

Steven Tyler certainly looked patriotic in his white shirt with blue stars as he approached the mic to take on the US national anthem at the start of the 2001 Indy 500. His performance had a little bit of everything that is signature Steven Tyler - a little bit of harmonica, a lot of growling, some yelling and a strategically placed "yeah" and at the end he replaced the word 'brave' with 'Indianapolis 500.'
10. No celebrity vocals here, just thousands of wonderful voices. At a major sporting event in Toronto in November 2014 as the Leafs vs Predators were getting ready to play, a singer's mic cut out and the Canadian crowd finished the American national anthem. At what sport was this?

Answer: Hockey

The singer's mic cut out partway through the American national anthem and Toronto fans picked up where the mic cut out and sang the rest. There are actually several examples of this happening at sporting events but this one is particularly cool because Nashville fans remembered that this had happened and as the Nashville Predators and Toronto Maple Leafs got set to play each other again, this time in Nashville in February 2015, the singer took a little break to let the American crowd belt out a couple of verses of the Canadian national anthem.
