Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John F. Kennedy - Lyndon B. Johnson - Richard M. Nixon: These were the first three US presidents in order who were born in the 20th Century. Who was next?

Answer: Gerald R. Ford

Kennedy was born in 1917 and was 35th president, serving from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963.
Johnson was born in 1908 and was 36th president from being sworn in to succeed Kennedy in November 1963 until January 1969.
Nixon was born in 1913 and served from January 1969 until he resigned in disgrace in August 1974.
Ford, the 38th president, was born in 1913 and succeeded Nixon, serving until January 1977.
2. Acker Bilk - David Rose - The Tornados: These were the first three British acts to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. Who was next?

Answer: The Beatles

Acker Bilk took "Stranger on the Shore" to number one in May 1962; David Rose reached number one with "The Stripper" in July 1962; and The Tornados were number one with "Telstar" in December 1962.

These were all instrumentals, so not only was "I Want To Hold Your Hand" the fourth number one by a British band, it was the first British song to top the Billboard Hot 100.
3. Reuben - Simeon - Levi: These were the first three sons of Jacob. Who was next?

Answer: Judah

The 12 sons of Jacob became heads of the 12 Tribes of Israel.
The sons were born to four different mothers.
4. Tinker - Tailor - Soldier: Which was the next in the list of occupations in this old nursery rhyme?

Answer: Sailor

In the oldest version of this English rhyme, which dates to 1475, the line is
"Tinker, Tailor,
Soldier, Sailor,
Rich Man, Poor Man,
Beggar Man, Thief."

Other variations also exist.

In the late 1960s, The Family Dogg, an English pop band, had a UK number six hit with an updated version:

"Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor
Rich or poor man's wife
Some may wish to change their dish
But it's a way of life."

The original line-up included Albert Hammond and Mike Hazelwood, who were to become a top-selling song-writing duo.
The drummer was Hollywood actor Steve Rowland, who was to become a top music producer.
5. Norman - Plantagenet - Lancaster: What was next in the line of English royal family dynasties?

Answer: York

If you add Windsor, the eighth royal family name, you may well need the mnemonic "No Plan Like Yours To Study History Wisely".

While the first five were houses of England, the Stuarts were firstly the royal family of Scotland, hence Stuart, Hanover and Windsor are royal families of the United Kingdom.
6. Hartnell - Troughton - Pertwee: Who was next on this list?

Answer: Baker

OK, there was a little bit less information in the question. These were the first three lead actors in the British TV series "Doctor Who?".

To name all 13 to the time this quiz was written, in order : William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker.

The science fiction show about a time traveller first appeared in 1963 but there were several breaks in transmission over the years.
7. Britain - Mexico - Spain: What was next on the list of countries that the USA has declared war on?

Answer: Germany

There is an important caveat that according to the US Constitution, only Congress can declare war against an international opponent and it has only happened five times.

According to dirjournal.com: "...despite this, the President of the United States has acted without the prior consent of Congress in at least 125 conflicts. Beyond this, there have also been many incursions authorized by Congress that stopped short of a full declaration of war."

War was officially declared against multiple enemies in WW1 and WW2.

The US Congress has not declared war against any country since WW2. And, the US has never lost a conflict in which it declared war.

In terms of this question, war was declared on Germany on April 6, 1917 and against Japan on December 8, 1941.

* Note to pedants: These five are the only occasions on which the US Congress has used the phrase "declaration of war" in the title of legislation.

Other wars, including Vietnam and in the Persian Gulf, were authorised by Congress. In Korea, the USA, and others, were acting under a United Nations mandate.
8. Nunavut - Quebec - Northwest Territories: What is next in the list of Canada's largest Provinces and Territories in terms of area?

Answer: Ontario

The total area of these seven is:

Nunavut, 2,093,190 square kilometres; 808,185 square miles.
Quebec, 1,542,056; 595,391.
Northwest Territories, 1,346,106; 519,734.
Ontario, 1,076,395; 415,598.
British Columbia, 944,735; 364,764.
Alberta, 661,848; 255,541.
Saskatchewan, 651,036; 251,366.

Nunavut became Canada's newest territory when it was established in 1999. Prior to that, the area was part of the Northwest Territories. It lies entirely within the Arctic climatic zone. Its winters can be bitterly cold, barely rising above -35 degrees celsius in January. At best in summer, temperatures rise to a comparatively balmy 10 degrees celsius.

Traditionally the lands were those of the Inuit people. The population at the 2016 Census was a tad under 36,000; with about 80 per cent of Inuit origin.
9. "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" - "Get Off Of My Cloud" - "Paint It Black": These were the first three Rolling Stones songs to top the Billboard Hot 100. What was next?

Answer: Ruby Tuesday

To put all seven in order:
"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", July 1965; "Get Off Of My Cloud", December 1965; "Paint It Black"; June 1966;
"Ruby Tuesday", March 1967;
"Honky Tonk Women", August 1969; "Brown Sugar", May 1971;
"Angie", October 1973.

"Missing You", August 1978, completes their tally of 20th Century number ones in the USA.
10. Brew - Ethereal - Media Puzzle: These were the first three in a list of 20th Century event winners from the year 2000. What was next?

Answer: Makybe Diva

Once again I have given you little to work on. All seven are racehorses to win the Melbourne Gold Cup.

The fourth new winner of the 2000 was Makybe Diva in 2003, on its way to three successive wins.

Americain (sic) won in 2010; Prince of Penzance in 2015; and Shocking in 2009.

The Melbourne Gold Cup is Australia's most prestigious horse race. It was first run in 1861 and the event is held on the first Tuesday in November each year. The day is a public holiday in Melbourne.
