Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which field of science should an aspiring mad scientist study if she wished to produce gray goo?

Answer: Nanotechnology

One oft-contemplated science fiction scenario envisions runaway nanotechnology converting all the matter of the universe into "nanites". The material they produce is called "gray goo". (Did you notice the "she"? Did it bother you? Well, we never seem to get female mad scientists in books or movies. At least now we have one in a FunTrivia quiz.)
2. A patient presents to an emergency room with G.O.O. Which medical specialist is most likely to be called?

Answer: Gastroenterologist

For a gastric outlet obstruction, a gastroenterologist would be the most appropriate. A person with a G.O.O. usually has tumor or inflammation preventing the stomach from emptying.
3. Which of the following might be considered a necessity for the owner of a "Goo Goo Dolls" product?

Answer: CD player

The Goo Goo Dolls are an "Indie" recording group. They were nominated in 1999 for a Grammy and have a fan club. Before doing this quiz, I had never heard of them. If you're reading this, you most likely missed the question and hadn't heard of them either. Can't tell, maybe they'll turn up on "The Daily Quiz".
4. According to Dictionary.com, which of the following words is derived from "goo"?

Answer: Goop

"Goon" is thought to be short for "gooney" meaning simpleton. "Goof" may originate from the French "goffe" meaning fool. "Ghoul" is from the Arabic "ghul" and related to the Arabic "ghala" meaning seized.
5. You're looking for the worm, "Ooey Gooey". When you find him Ooey is in pretty poor shape. Where is Ooey?

Answer: The railroad tracks

I've heard a number of versions of this preschool rhyme. When my children were in preschool, the version we used went like this:
Ooey Gooey was a worm
Ooey Gooey liked to squirm
Ooey on the railroad tracks
Ooey Gooey
I know: gross and shameful. But the kids loved it!
6. Which of the following is not a candy bar?

Answer: Goo Goo Blues

Howell Campbell of Tennessee was credited with inventing the first "combination candy bar" in 1912, the Goo Goo Cluster. At least three varieties of Goo Goos are now available: Goo Goo Supremes, Peanut Butter Goo Goos and Goo Goo clusters. Alas, no Goo Goo Blues.
7. What is the intended function of blue goo?

Answer: Fighting gray goo

If gray goo is consuming your friendly, neighborhood universe, you may be forced to take drastic action. Being desperate, you may elect to have your own not-so-mad scientists create "blue goo" to attack the gray goo. Of course, if your blue goo wins, you still have the blue goo to deal with.
8. Who/what does Dr. Goo treat in "Dr. Goo 2"?

Answer: A plague

"Dr. Goo" and "Dr. Goo 2" are computer games. In the first game 'lil Johnny ("'lil" is the correct spelling) is the patient. However, in "Dr. Goo 2", you must assist the good doctor in saving the world from a dastardly plague.
9. Which of the following would hold (or have held) no interest for a runner?

Answer: Red goo

Red goo is like gray goo, except in the case of red goo, it is the military that develops and unleashes it. Gu is a thick liquid nutrient suitable for ultra-marathon runners. Shoe goo is great for repairing running shoes. Gooshopping.com is a shopping site for runners.
10. According to "Debbie's School Room", which of the following recipes will make the best goo?

Answer: Mix 2 cups white glue, 1 3/4 cups water, 1 tsp. borax. Add 1/2 cup warm water.

The other recipe with borax makes "Gak". Gak is wonderful stuff for the young and for the young at heart. Slimy but not sticky, Gak will elicit exclamations of "gross" and "yuck" from just the right kind of people. (If you don't know who would be "the right kind of people" you have no business making Gak!) The following web page has more than 100 recipes for goo-like substances. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/3893/Goo.html#_Hlk404525316
