Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A is the able Alpha male, of course. He's the first one up in the A.M., and last one abed. Which word describes him best?

Answer: Accomplished

A is a born leader. In a recent interview, he admitted, "I don't know when I was born, but I vaguely remember being on the wall of a cave, and later lending myself to history with such greats as Adam, Alexander, Archimedes, Attila, and Arthur. I abound in geographical and astronomical names, beginning and end. E is forever extolling the essence of Europe, but he has amnesia when it comes to the other continents!"

A is not adipose (fat), as he prides himself on his amazing athletic attributes.
A is not arbitrary as he is always aware of the appropriate attitude and answer.
A is sometimes alliterative, but not always.
2. E is the most popular vowel in the English language, appearing more often than the others, so he might be said to be what?

Answer: Everywhere

"I was born in Europe," explains E, "during the era of empiricism. I built exceptional and exemplary edifices in Egypt and was enamored of Eurydice at one time. It was an enlightened and emancipated age. Euripides exited his own play one evening and embarked on eleven elaborate extravaganzas. No, I'm not exaggerating!"

E is certainly not elliptical, he's not even round.
E can be evasive at times, but he's usually easy to find.
E becomes ecstatic on occasion, and enjoys expressing his exuberance.
E was devastated to learn that an entire novel of over 50,000 words had been written in 1939 without using E. The novel "Gadsby" was written by one ErnEst VincEnt Wright. "You see," says E, "the author couldn't even put his name on the cover without me!"
3. I is aware of his importance, and doesn't care to be isolated as he is an integral part of the team. What describes him?

Answer: Indispensable

"I don't like to iterate interminably, but I have been invaluable to intelligent and informed individuals in incomputable incidents. Indivisibility would not exist without I." No, I is never infantile, he has been infinitely integrated in ideology. Inexperienced? No way! I knows impossibly intricate information.
Impudent? Well, maybe when he was little and had that irritating dot over his head. I is the very icon of idealism and imaginative thinking.
4. O is an omniscient overseer. He's in his eighties now, so he has to close his orbs and snooze on occasion. Which word describes him?

Answer: Octogenarian

O is getting on in years, but he can still ogle oysters. His dog, Octothorp, is an omnivorous ogre and is often thrown out of the house for offending the oatmeal cookies. O is never overbearing, but he used to be outre off and on. He is no longer omnipotent, as his joints ache most of the time.

In his brief interview, O declared, "Ooh, the occult and overpowering spells I've ordered in my old days! Had a sleeping spell backfire this morning and .... Zzz". We left him snoring ostentatiously.
5. Y can be a vowel or a consonant, so he's always busily rushing around and can get anywhere in what time?

Answer: Yoctosecond

Y is speedy indeed! A yoctosecond is a septillionth of a second. Y leans back in his yellow armchair, tents his fingers and crosses his leg. "It's fun being a vowel and a consonant, but it does require some major time management skills. Have you got a yo-yo I can borrow? Have to keep up my youthful yen for yodeling while I play". He yaks on while deftly executing the 'walk the dog', singing and winding yarn as he reaches for his yogurt. The guy needs two more arms!

Yahoo is found in "Gulliver's Travels", a rough, brutish creature resembling a human. Yakitori is marinated morsels of chicken, beef or seafood grilled Japanese style. Ylang-ylang is a tree found in the Philippines and surrounding areas. It has very fragrant greenish-yellow blossoms.
6. U uncovers an unorthodox plot to unseat him. Which word describes his feelings?

Answer: Uneasy

U was unsurpassed in his uncontested uprising years before, but now some usurping underlings have uprooted his Utopia and undermined his union. "I informed me that he was working incognito when this plot was hatched. I was instrumental in unearthing this ugly uprising, and, since being undercover, E has exposed the element of espionage. I owe O a great deal for urging us to oust this offensive and overthrow the oligarchy. A was always against anarchy. Y was seen yesterday giving yoga instructions to some young thing in York."

Undermining is just what U eschews.
Unilateral is one-sided, which U is not.
U refuses to be an underdog. Indeed, he has always been an overdog.
7. U removes his ultramarine umbrella from the ugly urn and unpretentiously urges us to undergo some unpredictable upheavals for the unification of the U.S. Unless we do so, we cannot consider ourselves what kind of citizens?

Answer: Upstanding

Unbeknownst to U, I has been implementing this very ideal. E has been encouraging everyone to enlist in the enterprise. O is outspoken in his optimism, A has affirmed his altruism, and Y was last seen yawning at the Y.
U's place has been uncontested for so long, he is unaccustomed to ultimatums, but he gives one in upbeat tones: "Update your calendars", he cries, "universal upgrades for all computers, and unlearn English, we will be using Urdu as a common tongue!"

After the unprecedented uprising, U reconsiders, when he understands that ultimately everyone chooses his own path.
8. U mentions that he and Q have a long history, and at one point Q became unexpectedly dependent on their union, until U pointed out that Q could stand on his own because of words that were adopted into the English language. True or False?

Answer: True

Qat, qanat, qindar, qintar, qi, qoph, umiaq, qiviut (still with the U but in a different placement), sheqel are but a few of the words where Q need not be followed by a U. Q feels much more confident not always relying on U, but he almost always needs a vowel friend in the English language. U is also relieved that Q overcame his separation anxiety.
9. U has the ultimate unblemished record. His scores in Un Trivia remain unsurpassed because he is what?

Answer: Unbeatable

U is Numero Uno in the vowelathon, as he has never been beaten. A almost aced the annual contest, but fell apart at the end. E explained that his energy level was exceptionally low. I was intoxicated and passed out in the finals. O fell off his ottoman, and Y yanked everyone's chain by yakking on his cell phone to yeomen in Ypsilanti.
10. I ask U how he would characterize his unquestionable vowel comrades. He says what?

Answer: Unassailable

U smiles and says, "You understand I have the utmost regard for my fellow vowels. They're up-to-date and useful, as well as uncompromising and upbeat fellows. A is always around and accessible. E is eager and extremely easygoing. I is informative and interesting. O is old and omniscient. Y is young and yeasty (full of vitality). I do my utmost to uphold the highest standards in our relationships."
Unassailable refers to being without question or doubt.
Ursine refers to bears.
Urial is a wild sheep of central Asia.
Uxorious refers to a wife, as in being especially fond of one.
