Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Spanish, X and Y are named what?

Answer: equis and i griega

The letters I and Y are essentially identical in use and pronunciation in Spanish. They come to the language from Latin and Greek influences though, so "i" is called "i latina" and "y" is called "i griega".
2. Rene DesCartes advanced analytical geometry greatly when he developed the Cartesian coordinate system. The X and Y intercepts are also referred to as what?

Answer: abscissa and ordinate

With this coordinate system the location of points on a plane may be described with two numbers.
3. A common automotive fuel additive is what?

Answer: xylene

Xylene improves octane rating, and helps keep your engine cleaner. Xylose is a sugar. The xylotine and xytheraldehol are fictitious words for the purpose of this quiz.
4. In Greek, X and Y are known (in English transliteration) as what?

Answer: chi and upsilon

X is called chi, and Y is called upsilon. Psi looks sort of like the letter Y, but the answer is still upsilon.
5. Since 1957, US military radio operators have used a standard phonetic alphabet so that letters could be understood more easily over radio transmissions. This current phonetic alphabet uses which words for X and Y, respectively?

Answer: X-ray and Yankee

X-Ray has been standard since 1913. Yoke was changed to Yankee in 1957.
6. X is often seen as a representation of what religious figure?

Answer: Jesus Christ

Chi and Chi Rho were common abbreviations for Christ in early Christianity. Some fundamentalist Christians are annoyed to see Xmas to mean Christmas, but there is a very long Christian tradition of using X or chi to mean Christ. Some postulate that this began because Christ, the Greek word for messiah, began with chi, and others believe it was used because the letter resembled the cross.
7. If an unmanipulated cell has 46 somatic chromosomes plus an X and a Y chromosome, then it is certainly of human origin. But this also means the cells come from which particular type of human?

Answer: Male

There are many abnormal ways that human chromosomes can be arranged, leading to a variety of well-documented disorders. The normal healthy human, however, has either the 46XX (female) or 46XY (male) pattern.
8. Wilhelm Roentgen discovered a new type of radiation that was poorly understood but quickly found wide use. This radiation has common use in the modern world, such as when you might be ill or injured and need a diagnostic ______ . (Fill in the blank).

Answer: X-Ray

Roentgen was the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics. He also had the foresight to limit exposure to his new rays by the use of lead shields. Smart guy!
9. Name a common musical percussion instrument that begins with xy.

Answer: Xylophone

It is a percussion instrument, because it must be struck to produce the desired sound. That brings on another peculiar question: Is a piano a stringed instrument or a percussion instrument or some sort of hybrid? But that's not part of this quiz.
10. Oxycodone and Oxycontin are both forms of an addictive analgesic drug. These fall into what class of pharmaceutical drugs?

Answer: Opiates

Oxycodone is the narcotic in both of these drugs and is a derivative of chemicals found naturally in the poppy plant. Oxycontin has been a particularly troublesome drug among abusers as it is meant to be long acting. Addicts and joy-seekers will often succeed in defeating the slow-release mechanism of Oxycontin leading to a rapid overdose and usually unintended death.
