Question 1 of 10
1. Agent Quentin Alphabet was more than a bit disturbed about the call he'd received this morning in his little office. The caller had told him that the quest he was about to embark upon was of utmost importance for the nation. Since he'd been phoned by the ruler of the Empire, Quentin had a right to be flummoxed. Whose call got the poor fellow in such a state? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Looking down at the notes he had taken during the call, Quentin checked the information he'd been given. A very valuable piece of jewelry has gone missing and there was one person who had seen it last - the man who had fixed the cabinet that held the item. Who will Quentin have to question first? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The interview with the help got our agent a bit further. He found out that when the caretaker was about to start the repair, a young woman took the jewel out to have it cleaned. The man couldn't remember much about the woman's appearance, but one thing had stuck in his memory. Her jacket had a very distinctive pattern, resembling fur he'd seen on a zoo animal last week. The black and white looked very good on her. What animal was he talking about? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The young lady in the black and white jacket was easy to find. She told Quentin that she had taken the jewel to the goldsmith to have it cleaned. After she'd returned to the palace, she'd handed it over to her superior, who was supposed to lock it away again. It was obvious that the girl didn't get along too well with the elderly woman that supervised her. She must be a real - what? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Unfortunately, it was impossible for Quentin to speak with the supervisor in person. He was only allowed to have a brief conversation with her on the phone because the poor woman had come down with a rather bad bout of what is usually considered a children's disease. What viral infection made her so highly contagious? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The short interview was enough to determine the next person the jewel had been handed to. According to the supervisor, she'd given it to her husband. He was supposed to place it back into the repaired cabinet. Her upbringing in a naval family was obvious when she threatened to drag her husband under the ship once she was well enough to do so. What did the woman threaten to punish her husband with? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. On his search for the jewel-bearing husband, he made his way to the couple's chambers, where he suspected the man might be. Alas, Quentin was delayed by the cook, who asked to fetch him a bucket of H2O. What does he have to get? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Finally, Quentin found the supervisor's husband in the garden under a tree. The good man had already had a pint too many and before he would give the agent any answers, Quentin had to agree that the man's wife was as stubborn as what Himalayan bovine? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. In the end, our frustrated agent managed to get the answer he'd been waiting for. Since he was aware that the man had a hearing impairment, Quentin wasn't surprised that the jewel had not been placed in the CABINET, but WITH THE CLARINET. Too bad, the fellow didn't know his woodwind instruments. He placed the jewel with the --? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. After a long quest, the valuable jewel was finally back in the secure cabinet where it belonged. Her Majesty was delighted and to celebrate this joyous occasion, she invited Quentin to a wonderful banquet. What did they have? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Queen

This shouldn't have been too hard. A female monarch is a queen. A quagga is an extinct animal from Africa similar to a zebra. Quark is a soft cheese made from milk, which tastes lovely with potatoes or bread. A queach is a thicket.
2. Looking down at the notes he had taken during the call, Quentin checked the information he'd been given. A very valuable piece of jewelry has gone missing and there was one person who had seen it last - the man who had fixed the cabinet that held the item. Who will Quentin have to question first?

Answer: Janitor

Asking the janitor, who fixed the cabinet, would be a step in the right direction. A jambiya wouldn't help much, since a curved dagger won't give much of an answer. Quentin could ask a jemadar, an Indian government official, but I doubt the man would have the answer our agent is looking for. A jaseran is a jacket made of fine chain mail.

Answer: Zebra

Zebra would be the best bet here. A zabra is a small Spanish sailing vessel used mainly in the 16th and 17th centuries. Zythum (Latinized form of zythos) is an Egyptian alcoholic beverage, which is used as medicine or for fun. Zythos is the Greek version of an Egyptian name for beer. Zephyr is a west wind or a light breeze.

Answer: Xanthippe

An ill-tempered woman is often called a Xanthippe. Actually, she was the wife of Socrates and it is not proven that she'd really been that hard to get along with. There seem to be a lot more stories documented about her than actual facts. Xenagogue is a fancy name for a guide. Xenophobia is the fear of strangers. If you have atypically dry skin you would suffer from xerodermia.
5. Unfortunately, it was impossible for Quentin to speak with the supervisor in person. He was only allowed to have a brief conversation with her on the phone because the poor woman had come down with a rather bad bout of what is usually considered a children's disease. What viral infection made her so highly contagious?

Answer: Varicella

Varicella is another name for chicken pox. Everyone can get it, but it is most often contracted by children less than 12 years of age. It manifests in itchy blisters all over the body. The disease is not threatening but extremely contagious. Venator is the Latin word for hunter. Vermilion is a bright red color and virology is the study of viruses.

Answer: Keelhaul

Keelhauling was used as punishment for sailors at sea. The sailor would be dragged under the keel of the ship, either lengthwise or from side to side. This sort of punishment usually caused serious injuries or drowning. A killock is a small anchor. Knickerbockers are loose trousers that end tightly around the knees. According to Wikipedia, a kremlin is a 'major fortified central complex found in historic Russian cities'. Often, however, it refers to the most famous one situated in Moscow.
7. On his search for the jewel-bearing husband, he made his way to the couple's chambers, where he suspected the man might be. Alas, Quentin was delayed by the cook, who asked to fetch him a bucket of H2O. What does he have to get?

Answer: Water

Well, H2O is obviously water. Whale is a well-known sea mammal. Washi is very fine paper, the Japanese use to make kites and lanterns. Wainscoting is paneling a wall or only the lower part of the wall.
8. Finally, Quentin found the supervisor's husband in the garden under a tree. The good man had already had a pint too many and before he would give the agent any answers, Quentin had to agree that the man's wife was as stubborn as what Himalayan bovine?

Answer: Yak

Yew is a species of trees. Yen is the currency of Japan. Yam is a root cultivated for food in warmer climates. Yaks have been domesticated for a very long time. They are kept for their fur, milk, meat and to carry heavy weights. They have a very gentle nature, are easy to train and most likely not stubborn at all.

However, it is problematic to take them on journeys across barren territory since they won't eat grain. The animals would starve if there wasn't any grass for them to eat.

Answer: Bassoon

Barcarole is the song the gondoliers sing in Venice. Batrachophobia is the fear of frogs and toads. Belling is the sound a deer makes when it is ready for mating.
10. After a long quest, the valuable jewel was finally back in the secure cabinet where it belonged. Her Majesty was delighted and to celebrate this joyous occasion, she invited Quentin to a wonderful banquet. What did they have?

Answer: Feast

And what a feast they had. Frost wouldn't have been nearly as much fun. A fossor is a grave-digger. A fetlock is the tuft of hair right above a horse's hoof.
