Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ANIMALS: It was reported that Ailbe, an Irish Wolfhound, was the cause of a war between Leinster and Ulster in the 1100s.

Answer: True

Irish Wolfhounds are impressive beasts and are the largest of the dog breeds. As to just how impressive they are, a gift of seven of them was presented to the Roman consul Symmachus in 393 AD by his brother Flavianus. In his letter of thanks, Symmachus proclaimed that all of Rome was in awe of the creatures. When you consider that this was a city used to seeing all manner of mighty creatures fighting in arenas, this is high praise indeed.

In the 1100s Ailbe was owned by Mesroda, the King of Leinster, and the dog was renowned for both its ferocity and fidelity. In light of the above statement about the dog's impressiveness, it is little wonder then that two rival kings, those of Ulster and Connaught, offered small fortunes for the dog which Mesroda declined. The two kings would go to war and this would prove to be the undoing of both Mesroda and his famous dog.
2. BRAIN TEASERS: Find the hidden word in the following sentence that is a synonym of the word in capital letters. The no-show lingerie wearing Lycanthrope had the crowd BAYING for blood.

Answer: Howling

The word was hidden among "no-sHOW LINGerie.

A howling is a long doleful sound associated with wolves. To bay means to howl loudly.
"The Howling" is also a 1981 horror film directed by Joe Dante and stars the likes of Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee and Dennis Dugan.
3. CELEBRITIES: Michael Van Wijk is an English bodybuilder, best known as Wolf in which British TV endurance sports game show?

Answer: Gladiators

"Gladiators" was the UK adaptation of the US programme, "American Gladiators", and its original run was for eight seasons between 1992 and 2000. The show involved four competitors, pitted against various Gladiators in five to six events, in an effort to gain points to reach the Eliminator, the final event of the night. Michael originally ran a gym in Bromley (London) that targeted bodybuilders and boxers.

In 1989 he auditioned for a role in the Kevin Costner directed movie "Dances With Wolves" (1990).

He didn't get the part but was inspired by this move to adopt the "Wolf" persona. After the completion of the "Gladiators" series he moved to New Zealand where he set up a series of gyms.
4. ENTERTAINMENT: In the Marvel Universe, which of these has also been known as the "White Wolf"?

Answer: Bucky Barnes

In the Marvel universe, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a close friend to Steve Rogers (Captain America) and has sometimes gone by the name of the "Winter Soldier". It is during the second episode of the television series "The Falcon & the Winter Soldier" ("The Star-Spangled Man" - March 2021) that we hear him called the "White Wolf". The name is bestowed upon him by the children of Wakanda.

This is a throwback, of sorts, to the "Black Panther" series of comic books in which there is character with the same name. The "White Wolf" first appears in "Black Panther #4" (1999). This character is introduced as a young (white) child that survives a plane crash on the Wakandan border. He has no name and T'Chaka takes him in and christens him Hunter. He, however is the polar opposite of Bucky. In the cinema universe, Barnes is a villain who becomes an anti-hero whereas Hunter, in the comics, is a hero who turns to evil.
5. FOR CHILDREN: In the American animated sit-com "Taz-Mania" (1991-95) what was the name of its resident wolf?

Answer: Wendal

"Taz-Mania" was built around the Looney Tunes character Taz, the Tasmanian Devil. Wendal T. Wolf, one of the outback characters in this series, is not technically a wolf but a Thylacine. Thylacines were marsupials native to Australia and are now extinct.

They were commonly called Tasmanian tigers, sometimes Tasmanian wolves. Wendal was voiced by Jim Cummings and was built upon the personality of Woody Allen. Wendal is also a little bit like Wile E. Coyote in character and he has the propensity to drive Taz crazy.
6. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: What do DIDMOAD (a genetic disorder), tungsten and a fictitious law firm in the television series "Angel" have in common?

Answer: Wolfram

DIDMOAD, which stands for diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, and deafness, is better known as Wolfram Syndrome. It is a rare genetic disorder that attacks the central nervous system, generally around the brainstem, and it was first described by Dr. Don J. Wolfram, M.D. in 1938.
Tungsten is a rare metal that bears the chemical symbol W and the atomic number 74. It is also known as wolfram.
"Angel", which aired from 1999 to 2004 and is a spin-off from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997-2003), introduced us to the international (and inter-dimensional) law firm Wolfram and Hart. The firm is actually a front for a cabal of demons that are colloquially known as the Senior Partners.
7. GEOGRAPHY: In which country would you find the Wolfe Creek Crater, where a dreamtime legend tells that it was formed by the emergence of a rainbow serpent?

Answer: Australia

The Wolfe Creek Crater (and its attached National Park) is situated in the northwest region of Western Australia. It is approximately 2800 kilometres (1,740 miles) from the capital city, Perth. The impact crater is claimed to be the second largest in the world. It is 880 metres across and is almost circular in shape. The meteorite that created it arrived on Earth about 300,000 years ago. It is estimated to have weighed 50,000 tonnes and was travelling at the staggering speed of fifteen kilometres per second (54,000 kilometres per hour).

The local Aboriginal people, who call the crater Kandimalal, had known of its existence for centuries but it wasn't discovered by Europeans until 1947. The local legend is that two rainbow serpents were crossing the desert, creating both Sturt Creek and the nearby Wolfe Creek as they journeyed, and the emergence of one of them, from underground, led to the creation of the crater.
8. HISTORY: The Wolf Amendment, passed by the US Congress in 2011, (generally) prohibits which of the country's following organizations from dealing with the Chinese government?

Answer: NASA

To be more specific, it prevents the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from utilizing government funds in dealings with either the Chinese government or any organizations affiliated with that government without the "explicit" approval of either the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or Congress itself.

This arose from a paper published in 1999 that outlined concerns that the Chinese government could be utilizing information shared by NASA and American satellite manufacturers to improve its technology in respect to their intercontinental missiles.

The ban was not received well by numerous sectors of the American scientific community, though the law did not rule out the possibility that there could still be dealings with China.
9. HOBBIES: "Ultimate Werewolf" (2008) is a card game that involves bluff and can be played by "up to" how many people?

Answer: 75

Distributed by Bezier Games Inc. the game challenges players from nine years of age upwards and can be played by at least five players and as many as seventy five. Apart from bluffing the game also requires socializing skills, deduction, negotiation and role playing. Each player within the game will have their own agenda.

For example, if you're a villager, your aim is to hunt and kill werewolves. On the other hand, if you're the werewolf, you need to convince the villagers that you are one of the good werewolves but, secretly, you are attacking them when the night comes.

There are also vampires in this game and, when you throw vampires into the mix, you're bound to have a bloodbath or two. (OK, sorry, not a good pun, my bad).
10. HUMANITIES: In 1812 the Brothers Grimm published a fairy tale about a wolf and how many young goats?

Answer: Seven

This tale has similarities with the story of the "Three Little Pigs". Mother goat goes off into the forest to search for food, warning her seven young goats to be wary of the tricks of the Big Bad Wolf. The wolf tries to con the kids (pun intended) but is betrayed by his gruff voice.

He solves this with honey but is foiled by his dark feet. He covers his body with flour and manages to deceive the goats and gain entry to the house. He devours six of the kids but the seventh escapes. When mother returns she finds the wolf asleep under a tree.

He cannot move due to being so full. She cuts open his stomach and the six young goats escape. She then fills his belly with rocks and sews him back up. Once awake the wolf goes to the river to get a drink, falls in and drowns with the weight of the rocks in his belly.
