Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. LITERATURE: Father Wolf appears in which of the following Rudyard Kipling stories?

Answer: The Jungle Book

Mowgli is the boy who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. The wolves that raise him are Father Wolf and his mate, Raksha. Raksha is easily the more ferocious of the two and her name, reportedly, in the language of the wolves is a reflection of that. The pair are helped in their efforts to raise Mowgli by a fun loving bear named Baloo and the black panther, Bagheera. Kipling published "The Jungle Book" in 1894 and a following set of stories, "The Second Jungle Book" was released a year later.
2. MOVIES: Gregory Peck, Roger Moore and David Niven join forces in which 1980 film that is based on a real life World War II incident?

Answer: The Sea Wolves

A team of aging British expatriates, who formed part of the Calcutta Light Horse Brigade, are called upon to destroy a radio transmitter on board a German ship docked in Portuguese Goa. The ship was believed to be transmitting information of Allied shipping movements in the area to German submarines. The movie also featured the varied talents of Trevor Howard, Patrick MacNee, Barbara Kellerman and, in keeping with the theme of this quiz, veteran German actor Wolf Kahler.
3. MUSIC: "... And Out Come the Wolves" is the third studio album for which "on the nose" American punk rock band?

Answer: Rancid

By the early 1990s, punk rock was beginning to show signs of staleness and stagnation. However three eponymous releases in 1994 - Green Day's "Dookie", Bad Religion's "Stranger Than Fiction" and "Smash" by The Offspring - kick-started it and bought it back to mainstream attention.

The following year "... And Out Come the Wolves", with its reggae-based "Roots Radical", the ska punk rave of "Time Bomb" and the all out assault of "Ruby Soho", would consolidate that work. This quickly became Rancid's most accessible and best selling record.

The band, by that point, had become the subject of a bidding war amongst record labels which provided the inspiration for the album's name.
4. PEOPLE: Hermann Wolf can best be described as an "ace". In which branch of the German military did he have a distinguished career?

Answer: Luftwaffe (Air Force)

An ace is a fighter pilot who is credited with more than five victories in combat. Wolf, born in Frankfurt in 1919, was assigned to the Eastern Front and claimed his first victory on May 22 in 1942. Less than four months later he would be claiming his 20th victory. In all Hermann flew 586 missions during his career and claimed 57 aerial victories. Awarded the Iron Cross, he also received the German Gold Cross in 1943. In 1945, he was presented with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, an award that recognises extreme levels of bravery in battle.
5. RELIGION: Which Catholic saint is said to have tamed the wolf of Gubbio?

Answer: St Francis of Assisi

The city of Gubbio was being terrorised by a fierce wolf that began by attacking their livestock. He then turned his attention to the humans of the town and soon came to feast on them alone. The legend says that no weapon was able to injure this wolf.

The folk were essentially trapped within the walls of their own city. St Francis ventured beyond the walls and went to the wolf's lair. The wolf charged at him but was stopped in his tracks when St Francis made the sign of the cross. St Francis understood that the wolf had attacked solely because he was hungry and made a deal with him - that if he stopped attacking the citizens and the animals in the area the townsfolk would ensure that he was always fed.

The citizens and the wolf both lived up to their ends of the bargain and, in a remarkable turn of events, when the wolf passed away two years later the citizens were deeply saddened.
6. SCIENCE: Never been kissed, in which constellation would you find the binary star system Wolf 424?

Answer: Virgo

Discovered by the Dutch-American astronomer Dirk Revyl in 1941, Wolf 424 is made up of two red dwarf stars and lies about 14.2 light years away from our sun. Twenty six years later it was identified that the two stars were also "flare" stars. This means that they can undergo some extreme changes to brightness for brief periods of time. Despite this they are considered two of the dimmest objects within fifteen light years of our sun.
7. SPORT: Which of the following won an Olympic gold medal for Great Britain?

Answer: Freddie Wolff

Frederick Wolff was the British Amateur Athletics Association's 440 yard (400 metres) champion in 1933. Three years later he was the lead out sprinter in his country's 4 x 400 metre relay team that would win the gold medal at the Berlin Summer Olympic Games. Freddie served in World War II before becoming a partner in the family's metal exchange business. In 1975 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire.
Enrique Wolff was an Argentinean football (soccer) player, Toto Wolff is a former Austrian race car driver and Josh Wolff was an American football (soccer) player.
8. TELEVISION: Which television series was once labelled "The Lone Wolf Rides Again" by the "Chicago Tribune"?

Answer: Walker, Texas Ranger

"Walker, Texas Ranger" is a crime action television series that first aired on CBS in 1993. It starred Chuck Norris in the title role as Cordell Walker, a Texas Ranger based at Fort Worth. His background includes being raised by a Native American uncle and he served in the US Marine's elite recon unit during a tour of duty in Vietnam. The Chicago Tribune's reference relates to an earlier film role of Norris', "Lone Wolf McQuade" (1983), in which he also portrayed a former US Marine who becomes a Texas Ranger.
9. VIDEO GAMES: Appearing in the stealth action video game "Metal Gear Solid" is which female antagonist whose weapon of choice is a Heckler & Koch PSG1?

Answer: Sniper Wolf

Sniper Wolf was born and raised in the midst of the war between Kurdish freedom fighters and Saddam Hussein's regime. The skills of stealth and evasion that she developed in this arena would later be honed by the Ghurkhas who would also teach her the art of sniping.

She has the power to lay in wait for her target for days without moving or have the need for food. Some legends indicate that she could extend this waiting period for weeks. During the Shadow Moses Revolt she would be seriously wounded and then killed by Solid Snake. "Metal Gear Solid", directed by Hideo Kojima, was released in 1998 and was published by Konami for the PlayStation console.
10. WORLD: The Wolf Prize, sponsored by the Wolf Foundation, is an international award for the sciences and the arts presented in which country?

Answer: Israel

The award is presented for achievements in a number of fields; agriculture, chemistry, medicine, physics, mathematics and the arts and recognises "achievements in the interests of mankind". Winners receive a diploma and a cash award of US$100,000. Though not as highly regarded as the Nobel Prize it is not without its own prestige.

In physics and chemistry it is considered second to the Nobel and it has become an excellent forecaster of future Nobel Prize winners. Fourteen of the twenty six winners of the Wolf Prize in physics between the years 1978 and 2010 would go forward to win the Nobel Prize. The Wolf Foundation was created by Dr Ricardo Wolf who served in Israel as Cuba's ambassador to the country.
