Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Eindhoven?

Answer: Noord-Brabant

Eindhoven, de Lichtstad (City of Light), lies in Noord-Brabant. In this city was the company of Philips founded almost 100 years ago. Philips first specialised in lightbulbs, hence the name 'Lichtstad'. This city is also home to the TU/e, the Technical University of Eindhoven, one of the largest TU's in the country. Eindhoven has one of the three major football teams in the Nederlands, namely PSV Eindhoven, which is sponsored by Philips (the 'P' in the name. SV means 'sportvereniging', sports association).
2. Haarlem?

Answer: Noord-Holland

Haarlem is the capital of North-Holland. I have not really much to say about this city as I hardly know it.
3. Rotterdam?

Answer: Zuid-Holland

Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe, possibly even the world. Large amounts of good arrive there each year by ship to be transported into Europe and vice-versa of course. Rotterdam lies in Zuid-Holland. Rotterdam is home to one of the three major football teams, Feyenoord Rotterdam. The football stadium, 'De Kuip', is the largest stadium in the Netherlands.
4. Utrecht?

Answer: Utrecht

The city of Utrecht lies in the Province with the same name. This city is the heart of the railway system in the Netherlands and also contains the Railway Museum. Utrecht is also the place where the Mint is located. Utrecht had been an important city in Netherlands past.
5. Amsterdam?

Answer: Noord-Holland

Amsterdam lies in Noord-Holland and is the capital of the Netherlands. It has a huge number of small canals and is also known for its red light district ('De Wallen') and a huge number of coffeeshops (coffeeshops are places where you can buy and consume small quantities of softdrugs as Marihuana, legally.

These coffeeshops are highly debated, not only in the Netherlands but in the whole of Europe as the legalization of soft-drugs is a popular topic in political debate). Numerous museums, including the Rijksmuseum, are in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is home to the third major football club, Ajax Amsterdam, named for the Greek Hero of the Trojan War and rival for Achilles' Armour and Weapons after his death.
6. Vlissingen?

Answer: Zeeland

Vlissingen is in the South-West, at the Coast.
7. Heerenveen?

Answer: Friesland

A city in Friesland known for the large skating contests which are held there.
8. Assen?

Answer: Drenthe

Assen is the Capital of Drenthe. It's known for the TT of Assen, a motorcycle contest.
9. Nijmegen?

Answer: Gelderland

Nijmegen is one of the largest cities in Gelderland. It contains an University. It lies close to the border between Gelderland and Noord-Brabant in the 'Land tussen Maas en Waal'. 'Maas' (River Meuse; thanks Lo78) and 'Waal' are two great rivers flowing though the Netherlands (if someone knows the English names for the river 'Waal', please feel free to send me a note :)) and Nijmegen lies between them. Because of its bridges, Nijmegen was one of the two objectives in the failed 'Operation Market Garden' in the Fall of '44 (together with Arnhem).
10. Helmond

Answer: Noord-Brabant

Near my hometown and not that far from Eindhoven lies Helmond. Not one of the most popular cities though. It's a rather small one as well but I simply had to include it since I was born there in it's Hospital. Dutch soccer fans might know 'Helmond Sport'.
