Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The country of Slovenia borders four countries and one major body of water. What is this body of water which also borders the cities of Venice, Trieste, Split, and Dubrovnik?

Answer: Adriatic Sea

Only a small portion (27 miles of coastline) of southwestern Slovenia borders the Adriatic Sea. Slovenia's other borders include Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Hungary to the northeast, and Croatia to the south. The Adriatic Sea is the northernmost arm of the Mediterranean Sea and it separates the Italian Peninsula from the Balkan Peninsula.
2. The tallest point in Slovenia is a mountain known as Triglav. Sharing part of its name with a calendar introduced in 46 BCE, in what range is Triglav located?

Answer: Julian Alps

At 2,864 meters (9,396 feet) Triglav is the highest mountain of the Julian Alps which extend from northeastern Italy to Slovenia. Triglav is an important symbol for the Slovene people as it is a focal point of the nation's first National Park and it is prominently featured on the country's Coat of Arms.
3. The nation of Slovenia achieved its independence in 1991 after the break-up of a much larger country. From which country did Slovenia and the nations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia split?

Answer: Yugoslavia

The land area of Yugoslavia was nearly 100,000 square miles of which the newly formed country of Slovenia comprised just about 8% of the total area. Unfortunately the break-up of Yugoslavia into the aforementioned nations was not peaceful as several wars raged in the area during the 1990s and 2000s.
4. Interestingly, a certain meridian nearly divides the country of Slovenia in half from west to east. Which meridian, corresponding to Central European Time (UTC+01:00), passes through the center of Slovenia?

Answer: 15th Meridian East

In addition to Slovenia, the 15th Meridian East also passes through the Norwegian islands of Spitsbergen and Svalbard, as well as Lake Chad in Africa. The distances between certain points on Earth depends on both longitude and latitude so at Slovenia's location at 46˚N the Prime Meridian and the 15th Meridian East are located about 1,156 kilometers (718 miles) apart whereas at the equator the Prime Meridian and 15th Meridian East are about 1,667 kilometers (1,036 miles) apart.
5. One of the major rivers of Central Europe flows through Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. What is the name of this tributary of the Danube River that also flows through the capital cities of Zagreb and Belgrade?

Answer: Sava River

At 990 kilometers (615 miles) in length, the Sava River is the second-longest tributary of the mighty Danube River. Centrally located in Slovenia, Ljubljana is the most populous city in Slovenia (2015 data), and it is estimated that the city was settled around 2000 BCE. Similar to other prominent European cities, Ljubljana features both a castle and cathedral that are popular tourist sites.
6. There are several geographical regions within the nation of Slovenia but over half of the country's land area is covered by forests.

Answer: True

Within Europe, Slovenia is the third most forested country after Finland and Sweden with over 58% of its area considered forest. The inner regions of Slovenia are lush with oak and beech trees whereas the mountainous areas are dominated by spruce, fir, and pine trees.

In addition to being heavily forested, Slovenia is also a very mountainous country with more than 90% of its area at more than 200 meters (656 feet) above sea level.
7. One of Slovenia's natural treasures is a cave system that was declared a World Heritage Site in 1986. What is the name of this cave system that contains some of the largest underground canyons in the world?

Answer: Skocjan Caves

The Skocjan Caves are a part of the Karst Plateau that is located in both Slovenia and Italy. This area is rich in limestone, dolomite, and gypsum and it comprises most of Slovenia's border with the Adriatic Sea. The Skocjan Caves of Slovenia are notable for their massive canyons and the natural beauty within the caves.
8. In Northeastern Slovenia there is a historic city that lies on the Drava River. What is the name of this city that is famous for its namesake castle, the Judgement Tower, the Water Tower, and for the destruction that occurred there during World War II?

Answer: Maribor

In 2015, the population of Maribor was 96,000, ranking it as the second-most populous city of Slovenia but still only about one-third the population of Ljubljana. The area around Maribor was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1941. The city was also the site of a German prisoner-of-war camp and it was one of the most damaged towns in Yugoslavia as it was bombed in the latter years of World War II by the Allies.
9. Historically Slovenia has been divided into four regions called Carniola, Carinthia, Styria, and Littoral. These four regions were the crown lands of a powerful ruling family of Central Europe. What was the name of this family whose descendants occupied the throne of the Holy Roman Empire from 1438 to 1740?

Answer: Habsburg

In addition to the position of Holy Roman Emperor, the House of Habsburg also produced rulers of Germany, Austria, Bohemia, Spain, and Portugal among others. For many years the area of Slovenia was under the rule of the House of Habsburg and even after independence the crown regions were still commonly used to describe areas of the country.

The largest and most prominent regions are Carniola and Styria.
10. The nation of Slovenia has only one natural island. What is the name of this island which lies in a namesake lake that was the site of the World Rowing Championships in 1966, 1979, 1989, and 2011?

Answer: Bled Island

The dominant feature of Bled Island is a church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary that is a popular spot for weddings. Lake Bled is a glacial lake that has a maximum depth of 30 meters (97 feet) and a surface area of just 1.45 square kilometers (0.56 square miles). The city of Bled is located in the northwest of Slovenia about 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Ljubljana.
