Standing 8848 meters above sea level, Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth. Named after Sir George Everest, a former British Surveyor General of India, the peak is part of the Himalayan chain of mountains. Attempts to scale the summit began in the early part of the 20th century but it was not until 1953 that the first successful expedition was made by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
