Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The famous Lorelei, also known as the murmuring rock, can be found in which river?

Answer: Rhine

The murmurings of the rock are caused by the currents in the river being amplified and echoed by the rock, as it sits in a stretch where the river narrows. These murmurings gave rise to the legend of a beautiful girl who fell to her death from the rock and now spends all eternity luring fishermen to crash their vessels on the rock.

The Lorelei has inspiring many musicians, among them Shostakovich, Mendelssohn, Wishbone Ash, George Gershwin, Styx and the Scorpions.
2. Toronto stands on the shore of which lake?

Answer: Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario forms the boundary between the Canadian province of Ontario and the American state of New York. Other major cities on the lake include Mississauga, Hamilton and Oshawa on the Canadian side and Rochester and Greece in USA.
3. The Dutch city of Amsterdam stands on which river?

Answer: Amstel

The Amstel is a small river, only 31 kilometres long (19 miles) and flows from Nieuwveen to Amsterdam where it ends at Muntplein Square, although it is connected via underground pipes to the IJ bay and from there to the North Sea. The river also gives its name to the Dutch brewery, Amstel, and the eponymous beer.
4. Which is the largest lake in UK?

Answer: Lough Neagh

Lough Neagh is in Northern Ireland and five of the country's six counties have a coastline on the lough, with Fermanagh being the only one that does not. The lough is famed for its Lough Neagh Eel, which has Protected Geographical Status under law, in much the same way that champagne does. These eels are highly prized by restaurants throughout the world.
5. What is the study of inland waters called?

Answer: Limnology

Limnology is the study of all types of inland water, including lakes, rivers, streams and reservoirs as well as ecological systems of each. The word is derived from the Greek for lake, "limne" combined with the word for knowledge, "logos".
6. Where does a Black Cart join with a White Cart to become a River Cart?

Answer: Glasgow

Black Cart Water flows from Lochwinnoch in Renfrewshire and runs alongside Glasgow airport before joining with White Cart Water which originates in Eaglesham, East Renfrewshire and flows through Paisley. Together the two rivers then form the River Cart, which is less than a mile long, and joins the mighty River Clyde before its journey through Glasgow.
7. The engineering marvel that is the Hoover Dam is famous throughout the world, but what is the name of the reservoir formed by the dam?

Answer: Lake Mead

Lake Mead, situated about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Las Vegas has a huge surface area of 640 square kilometres (247 square miles) and provides water to Nevada, Arizona, California and Mexico. When water levels are low, it is well worth a visit to be able to see the remains of St. Thomas, the town that was submerged in the late 1930s by the building of the reservoir.
8. The Pilgrim's Way is an ancient route to Canterbury from Winchester. The Great Stour is Canterbury's river but on which river is Winchester built?

Answer: River Itchen

The Itchen starts near the site of an English Civil War battle, in Cheriton, Hampshire and flows through Winchester, close to the cathedral and the city walls before going to Twyford, through the Itchen Valley Country Park and on to Southampton, passing very close to the St. Mary's stadium, home to Southampton football club, before joining the Southampton Water and ultimately, the Solent.
9. The Murray River is the longest in Australia, but which would be the second longest?

Answer: Murrumbidgee River

The Murray is the longest Australian river by some way, but at almost 1500 kilometres (930 miles) long, the Murrumbidgee isn't exactly short. It is a tributary of the Murray and flows through New South Wales. In the Aboriginal language of the area, murrumbidgee means "big water".
10. What could be more romantic than a trip to the city of canals? Which city in the West Midlands of England has more miles of canal than Venice?

Answer: Birmingham

Birmingham, but only by a small margin. While Venice has 42 kilometres (26 miles) of canal, Birmingham beats it with 56 kilometres (35 miles). Birmingham was the hub of the UK's canal network when barges were a primary form of transport and while you won't find The Bridge of Sighs or The Doge's Palace there you can get romantic whilst passing The Museum of Coffin Making or The Malt House pub, where President Clinton sat on the balcony and enjoyed a pint in 1998.
