3. The Great Wall of China is one of Asia's most famous structures. Which group of Mongolian nomads forced the construction of the Great Wall of China?

Answer: Xiongnu

The Great Wall of China was guarded by 300,000 soldiers under marshal Meng Tian's leadership. It was a means of defense against the destructive Xiongnu raids and was built to protect against invasions from Mongolians, among others.
4. What is the name of the mountain range that roughly connects Mongolia, Kazakhstan, China, and Russia?

Answer: Altai Mountains

The Altai Mountains are a mountain range in central Asia. They are the site where Russia, China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan closely come together. Additionally, the mountains are the water source for the rivers Irtysh, Ob, and Yenisei. The Altai Mountains are considered the origins of the Turkic peoples.
5. Which colours make up the Mongolian flag?

Answer: Red, blue, and yellow

On the Mongolian flag, blue represents the sky. The skies in Mongolia are typically cloudless for more than 50% of the year. Red stripes symbolize eternity, and there is a yellow Soyombo symbol.
6. The majority of Mongolia's land is non-agricultural. Therefore, approximately 30% of modern Mongolia has remained nomadic.

Answer: True

7. What is Mongolia's largest city in terms of size?

Answer: Ulan Bator

Ulan Bator is also Mongolia's capital. It is sometimes spelled 'Ulaanbaatar', and previously held the names Khuree, Orgoo, and Niislel Khuree. Ulan Bator lies in the valley of the Tull River.
8. Which country is found directly west of Mongolia?

Answer: Kazakhstan

Mongolia is the second largest landlocked country in the world, next to Kazakhstan. Most of Mongolia is covered with a barren land as it is unable to support agriculture. To the south of Mongolia lies the Gobi desert.
9. Mongolia's capital, during Kublai Khan's rule, was once moved to Beijing.

Answer: true

Kublai Khan, who ruled from 1260-194, appointed Beijing as his capital city for the great Mongolian Empire (i.e., the Great Khanate). However, after being in power for more than one hundred years, Kublai Khan's Yuan Dynasty was succeeded by the Ming Dynasty in 1368. As the Ming took the Yuan by force, they destroyed the then-Mongolian capital Karakorum, allowing Mongolia to fall back into anarchy. The remaining Mongol nobles and supporters went north.

10. Did the Mongols ever capture Zhengtong, the Chinese emperor (1435-1449)?

Answer: Yes

In the early 15th century, the Oirads under Khan Esen Tayisi gained the upper hand, and raided China in 1449. The raid was due to a conflict over Esen's right to pay tribute. The capture of a Chinese emperor was a highlight of medieval Mongolia.
