Answer: Connacht

The island of Ireland is divided into four provinces. Connacht has five counties - Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo - and is the most westerly. Munster, in the South, has six counties. Leinster, in the east, has twelve and Ulster has nine, six of which comprise Northern Ireland.
2. The Irish (Gaelic)name for Sligo is "Sligeach". What does this mean?

Answer: Full of Shells

Sligo has over 150 km of Atlantic Ocean coastline and you will certainly still find plenty of shells around the coast. Sligo is also home to numerous mussel farms.
3. What is the area of Sligo county?

Answer: 1,836 square kilometres

Sligo is the 22nd largest county (of 32) on the island of Ireland and the 18th largest (of 26) in the Republic of Ireland.
4. Which river flows through Sligo Town?

Answer: The Garavogue

The Garavogue is Ireland's shortest river and Sligo Town can be found at its mouth.
5. The largest megalithic cemetery in Ireland is located four miles from Sligo Town. What is this area called?

Answer: Carrowmore

There are approximately 30 tombs, predominantly dolmens and passage tombs, at the site and the traces of others have been detected. Archaeologists have argued over the exact age of the site although it is now believed that many of the tombs date from a period between 4300 and 3500BC.

Answer: Rosses Point, Enniscrone, Strandhill

Ireland has over 400 golf clubs. The County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point was founded in 1894 and is home to the West of Ireland Championship which is held every Easter.
7. Seven kilometres north east of Tubbercurry, Sligo there is a hill of great archaeological interest, called Knocknashee. What does this name mean?

Answer: Hill of the Fairies

Knocknashee 'Hill of the Fairies' has always been of archaeological interest because of its two cairns and the remains of 30 circular house sites. In 1988, with the use of aerial photography, Knocknashee was identified as a hilltop fort. The fort is 700 metres long and 320 metres wide, enclosed by two earth and stone ramparts and covers an area of 53 acres.
8. Which of these lakes is NOT found in County Sligo?

Answer: Lough Nanannagh

Lough Nanannagh is in neighbouring County Mayo. Sligo is known for its lakes and fishing and many of its lakes have crannogs (small artificial islands where people lived). Lough Gara in particular has many interesting examples of crannogs.
9. What is Sligo's highest mountain?

Answer: Truskmore

While Sligo is quite a mountainous county, none of the mountains are very high by international standards. At 647 metres, Truskmore is the highest point in County Sligo.
10. Which legendary Irish person is rumoured to be buried at the top of Knocknarea, a mountain eight kilometres south of Sligo Town?

Answer: Queen Maeve

The cairn (mound of loose stones) at the top of Knocknarea is 10 metres high and is rumoured to be the burial place of Queen Maeve. She was a warrior queen who lived approximately 2000 years ago. She is most famous as a protagonist in the story of the Cattle Raid of Cooley (The Táin Bó Cuailnge) and as an adversary of Cúchulainn - the legendary Irish hero.
