Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is the HEAVIEST living reptile in the world? (It happens to have a marine habitat)

Answer: Saltwater crocodile

The saltwater crocodile is not a creature you'd like to meet unexpectedly. The record breaking crocodile weighed 1,360 kg or 3,000 lbs. There have been reports of larger crocodiles but the claims are unsubstantiated. The 1,360kg monster was 6.3 metres or 20' 8" long, and yet strangely they can hide in the water almost invisibly, remaining motionless until it's time to strike!
2. Which Greek philosopher wrote the story of the city of Atlantis, a city that apparently vanished into the sea thousands of years ago?

Answer: Plato

Plato wrote about the ancient city of Atlantis in his "Timaeus" and "Critias" dialogues. Nobody knows if the story of Atlantis is true or not, however numerous locations have been speculated to be the original site of Atlantis including Santorini and the Azores.
3. Of which country's origin was the first warship captured by the famous pirate "Blackbeard", aka Edward Thatch/Teach?

Answer: France

Blackbeard first captured a ship from the French navy, and from this point on his pirate career and legend began.
4. What is the name of this 600 mile stretch of ocean said to consistently have the worst seas in the world?

Answer: Drake Passage

The Drake Passage, the space between Cape Horn of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula, has the worst seas in the world. It is common for the Drake Passage to have hurricane force winds every other week. Because of the danger in navigating these waters, the allure has brought many people to trying a colorful array of ways in crossing the passage, including rowing and sailing it, successfully!
5. What is the name of this chain of nine islands that are a surface manifestation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and were discovered by Portuguese explorers?

Answer: The Azores

The Azores, due to their location, are a frequent fuelstop of ships crossing the Atlantic. The Azores are famous for the whales that pass very closely to the islands and the great game fishing of marlin.
6. What is the name of the Indian tribe that the Caribbean Sea is named after?

Answer: The Carib Indians

The Carib Indians were fierce warriors who colonized many islands with their canoe sailing skills. They commonly slaughtered the more innocent Arawak Indians and often participated in cannibalism. Their rule saw its end when the Spanish realized they couldn't contain the Caribs peacefully, so they began killing them off.
7. What are the names of the "ABC" islands in the Caribbean Sea?

Answer: Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao

The ABC islands are Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. This is also their order from smallest to largest. They are located immediately north of Venezuela.
8. What is the name of this 50-foot-long ancestor of the Great White Shark that has been extinct for at least several hundred thousand years?

Answer: Megalodon

The Megalodon was a massive pre-historic shark, many times larger than today's Great White Sharks in fact. The reason for it becoming extinct is still unknown.
9. Which two navies fought in the 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea in which there was no clear determined winner afterwards?

Answer: Japan, United States

The 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea was a fierce naval battle between Japan and the United States. While the Japanese inflicted more damage on Allied (US and Australia) vessels than vice versa, it's also considered an American victory as the battle had the desired consequence of turning the Japanese Navy around and preventing further advance towards Australia.

It also prevented two of the Japanese Navy's vessels from fighting in the Battle of Midway due to damage sustained.
10. What European principality is home to Port Hercules?

Answer: Monaco

The great principality of Monaco is home to Port Hercules. The name for the port comes from the ancient myth that Hercules at one point passed through what was Monaco. The port hosts the famous "Monaco Yacht Show" every year which always includes some of the most famous private luxury yachts in the world.
