In 2008, Ajaccio's population was just over 65,000, while Bastia's was 44,000, and Porto-Vecchio's was 11,000. Corte is the only inland town among the possible answers, and is the smallest of them, at only 7,000.

GR20, also known as The Corsican Haute Route, is an amazing long distance trail. The variety of scenery is extraordinary, and is especially dramatic around the crux of the route, La Cirque de la Solitude, where fixed chains help you down steep rock faces. For almost all of the route, you are above 5,000', with the highest point at 7,355', and you will go up and down well over 33,000' if you do the whole trail.

Mohammed's old palace, which overlooks the main square in L'Île Rousse, was later owned by a Scandinavian holiday company and operated as a tour hotel. With its red rocky harbour and immaculate white beach, L'Île Rousse is one of the jewels of North Corsica.

Calvi is a vibrant seaside town with a historic past. Bars and restaurants line its harbour, where cruise ships often visit, and which is overlooked by an impressive old citadel. On 15 August (the Feast of the Assumption, and Napoleon Bonaparte's birthday), there is a massive fireworks display, which includes a 15,000 foot jump into the sea by Foreign Legion Parachutistes.

Three lines serve the island, all from Ponte-Leccia, travelling to Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi. A fourth line, to Porto-Vecchio, was damaged by bombing in World War II and never re-opened. The little trains take you through spectacular scenery, with breathtaking drops at the side of the track, through long mountain tunnels and over frightening bridges and viaducts, one of which, at Vecchio, was built by Gustave Eiffel, more famous for his tower in Paris.

A flag showing a blindfolded Moor's head was adopted in the early 18th century by the then King of Corsica. During Corsica's struggle for liberation, Pasquale Paoli ordered the blindfold to be changed to a bandanna.

Anglais is essentially one long waterfall, which is split into a series of smaller falls that have carved pools in the rock, in which it's great to swim and paddle. It's a favourite place to visit for families with children, although it's a fair walk through the forest to get to it.

The mountains of Corsica are a wonderful area - wild and rocky in most places, but with some beautiful high alpine pastures where wild sheep (mouflons), goats and pigs roam. There are deep glacial lakes, and shepherds' huts where, in the summer, you can buy fabulous homemade cheese.

Answer: During a period of extreme drought in the 18th century, it had the only river still running.

The Restonica River starts high in the mountains at Lac du Melo (5,633'). It gets its name from the Latin-derived expression "resta unica", as it was the only flowing water available during a severe drought. The river has carved wonderful gorges, and provides great rock pools in which to bathe.

Born in Corte, Dominique Colonna was a goalkeeper who played for Stade Français, OGC Nice and Stade de Reims in the period 1949-1963, winning the French Championship four times, the Coupe de France once, and the Trophée des Champions once. He appeared for the national team 13 times, and went on to manage Cameroon for five years in the late '60s.
