Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am the sea which lies between Russia and Alaska (USA). During the winter months, I can be fully covered in sea ice. What is my name?

Answer: Bering Strait

Historically, when global sea levels were much lower than today, the Bering Strait was above sea level. It is this land bridge that has been credited with allowing human migration into the Americas. The Strait of Gibraltar lies between Gibraltar and Morocco. The Small Sea Strait is part of a Russian lake. The Bass Strait is the name of the sea between mainland Australia and Tasmania.
2. I am a sea off the coast of China and am also the colour of the sun. What am I called?

Answer: The Yellow Sea

Other seas which include colours in their names in the English language are the Red Sea, the Black Sea and the White Sea. The Yellow River flows out into this sea, and both are named due to the colour of the sediment carried by the water. It is part of the East China Sea, which is the northern section of the Pacific Ocean.
3. I lie between Europe, Africa and the Americas, while Iceland sits at one end of me. What is my name?

Answer: The Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic is divided in two (north and south) by the equator. The Pacific Ocean is the world's largest, and covers nearly 50% of the Earth's surface. The Indian Ocean stretches from East Africa to the West coast of Australia - many people believe it is only a small area surrounding the Indian subcontinent. How far the Arctic Ocean stretches geographically depends on the time of year; however, there are strict political boundaries that remain constant.
4. I am the ocean that surrounds Antarctica and am the owner of many names. One of those listed below, however, is not a name I go by. Which one is it?

Answer: Arctic Ocean

The generally accepted divide between the Antarctic Ocean and those to the north is at the latitude of 60°S. Contrary to many jokes, a penguin will never naturally meet a polar bear. The word "Arctic" is derived from the Latin name of the brown bear: Ursus arctos. Antarctica is 'the place with no bears'.
5. I am the smallest (by surface area) of the North American Great Lakes that lie between the USA and Canada. What name do I go by?

Answer: Lake Ontario

Despite not being the smallest from a bird's eye view, Lake Erie is when judged by total volume and maximum depth. Some people view the lakes as inland seas similar to the Caspian and Aral seas of Asia. The lakes have been dated to have formed about 10,000 years ago, when the North American ice sheet of the last Ice Age started to retreat.
6. I am an inland sea that has been shrinking at a horrifying rate since the 1960s. What am I called?

Answer: Aral Sea

The modern Aral Sea is thought to be 15-20% of its original size (pre-1960). The shrinkage is due to the two main supply rivers that support the sea being diverted into the desert for irrigation measures. Such a change in the level of water has directly caused climate change in the surrounding regions.
7. I am in the African rift system, and named after a long-ruling British monarch. What is my name in the English-speaking world?

Answer: Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria (which has various African names) is the largest lake in Africa. It was renamed by the explorer John Hanning Speke in honour of his Queen. Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya) is the largest waterfall in the world.
8. I am the largest sub-glacial lake under the Antarctic Ice. What name do I go by?

Answer: Lake Vostok

The lake was found in the 1970s after GIS (Geographic Information System) started to be used on the continent. Lake Vostok's waters are around -3 °C. However, they stay liquid due to the high pressure of ice above, and the geothermal (inner earth) heat from below.
9. I am a long body of water in Scotland. It is said that my waters hide an aquatic dinosaur. What am I traditionally called?

Answer: Loch Ness

The River Ness takes the water out from Loch Ness into the North Sea at Inverness. The Caledonian Canal is the name for the full water stretching right across mainland Scotland; Loch Ness is just one part of this. Loch Lomond is further south, but is considered to be the next famous Scottish loch after Ness.
10. I am a vast reservoir in the River Nile. I was formed after the creation of the Aswan Dam in the late 20th century. What name was given to me?

Answer: Lake Nasser

The lake is named after the man who proposed the creation of the Aswan Dam, President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Lake Nubia is the name given to portion which lies in Sudan rather than Egypt, although geographically they are the same. Contrary to the water's name, it is in fact a reservoir (man-made) and not a lake.
