"The Bridge on the River Kwai" is a famous book written by Pierre Boulle (who also wrote "Planet of the Apes") and an Oscar winning movie starring Alec Guinness and William Holden. It is a work of fiction but based on the Japanese forcing allied POWs to build a railroad in Burma. Today the actual Bridge on the River Kwai is a modern structure and has nothing to do with the story.

It is located close to where the real Bridge on the River Kwai was and is a major tourist attraction. A nearby museum contains parts of the original bridge and other war memorabilia, and a cemetery in the area contains the bodies of over 6,000 Allied soldiers who died during the making of the Thailand-Burma Railway.
