Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which ocean is described as the commercial highway between important industrial regions of western Europe and the northeastern states of USA?

Answer: Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic Ocean serves as the commercial highway between important industrial regions of western Europe and northeastern states of the USA. It has some of the best seaports in the world; Montreal, London and New York. It has the longest coastline among all oceans. It also contains famous islands like Puerto Rico, Cuba and Jamaica.
2. The Grand Banks of Newfoundland are famous fishing grounds. What feature of the water bodies present there attract fishes?

Answer: The meeting of warm Gulf Stream Drift and cold Labrador Current

The meeting of the warm Gulf Stream Drift and the cold Labrador Current causes plankton (fish food) to be found in abundance in the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, making it an excellent fishing ground. The meeting of the two currents also causes a dense fog to accumulate there. It is dangerous to shipping.
3. Which strait among the following is not a real one?

Answer: Strait of Bartholomew

The Strait of Magellan is located at the southernmost tip of South America. It was named after Ferdinand Magellan, who first discovered it. The Strait of Gibraltar separates the western parts of Europe and Africa, and it connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. Cook Strait is located at about 40°S in the Tasman Sea, separating New Zealand's North and South Islands. Bartholomew Diaz was a great explorer and was the first person to reach the Cape of Good Hope; however, he does not have a strait named after him.
4. Some famous rivers are usually known with the names of an adjoining river, like the rivers Murray-Darling in Australia. Which one of the following rivers do not form such a pair?

Answer: Amazon-Niger

The rivers Tigris and Euphrates form a pair and they flow into the Persian Gulf. The Rivers Parana and Paraguay form a pair in South America, while Mississippi and Missouri do the same in North America. However, the Amazon and Niger form no such pair; the Amazon is located in South America, while the Niger is located in the continent of Africa.
5. Which one of the following is an inland water body?

Answer: Caspian Sea

The Caspian Sea is the only inland water body in the above mentioned options. The Kara Sea is located above Asia, quite close to the Barents Sea and White Sea. The Bay of Fundy experiences extremely high tidal ranges and the highest tidal ranges have been recorded to be about 20m.

The Gulf of Panama is located on the western side of the Isthmus of Panama, at the northernmost part of South America. It is not very famous.
6. What is the common factor between Lake Baikal, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Albert?

Answer: They are formed by water accumulating in rift valleys

Both Lakes Albert and Tanganyika are located in the East African Rift Valley, which extends for about 6,440 kilometres and contains Lakes Nyasa and Edward in addition to these two lakes. Lake Baikal is located in a rift valley in Russia and is one of the deepest fresh water lakes of the world. None of the other options apply to any of these lakes.
7. Which isthmus previously separated the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, before a famous canal was constructed across it?

Answer: Isthmus of Suez

The Isthmus of Suez separated the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea before the Suez Canal was constructed across it. It is a place of great strategic importance. The Isthmus of Panama links North and South America, although the Panama Canal was constructed across it. There is no Isthmus of Bering, though the Bering Strait is quite famous. Amur is the name of a river in Asia.
8. The Lakshadweep islands can be found in which sea?

Answer: Laccadive Sea

The word "Lakshadweep" means a cluster of one lakh, or one hundred thousand islands. However, in reality, it is a group of 36 islands located in the Laccadive Sea, the sea forming the eastern boundary of the Arabian Sea. The Aleutian Sea does not exist. The Beaufort Sea is located just above Alaska, and is quite close to the Bering Sea.
9. Christopher Columbus visited America, but he never came across this famous waterbody during his explorations. It was discovered by Amerigo Vespucci in 1497 and is very close to the Caribbean Sea. Which water body am I talking about?

Answer: Gulf of Mexico

The Gulf of Mexico is approximately 1,150 kilometres wide and is filled with sedimentary rocks and debris. Despite a narrow connection with the Atlantic Ocean, it experiences very small tidal ranges. It is about 4,384 metres deep at its lowest point. Both Lake Baikal and River Lena are situated in Russia.
10. We finish with oceans. Which ocean water has the lowest salinity?

Answer: Arctic Ocean

The Antarctic Ocean does not actually exist; the ocean surrounding Antarctica is known as the Southern Ocean, and it extends up to 60°S. The Arctic Ocean occupies about 14,056,000 square kilometres. Evaporation is very low in the Arctic Ocean and it also receives a lot of freshwater from rivers and streams such as the Ob, Yenissey, Lena and Mackenzie; it's connection to the surrounding oceanic waters is also very limited, which has comparatively much greater salinity. Due to all these reasons, it has a very low salinity.
