Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You undoubtedly have heard of the Space Coast. Where might you find Florida's Space Coast?

Answer: near Cape Canaveral

As with all the named coasts in this quiz, their location is inexact and general at best. The Space Coast is located on the eastern coast of Florida loosely from Eldor in southeastern Volusia County south to around the Brevard County/Indian River County line. Near the north/south center of the Space Coast you will find the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral.
2. Another of Florida's named coasts is the First Coast. Using your logic and your knowledge of American history, where will you find Florida's First Coast?

Answer: near Saint Augustine

Florida's First Coast is located on the Atlantic side, or east coast of Florida roughly from the Florida/Georgia state line running south to Marineland, just north of Flagler Beach. It was named the First Coast for two reasons. First, because St. Augustine, the first city in the U.S.A., is located near the center of this coast, and second because it is the first of Florida's coasts a traveler encounters when traveling down the eastern edge of the state.
3. This coast is a large coast. It runs from Pensacola to the Mexico Beach area. This coast has a nickname. Sometimes it is called the Redneck Riviera. What is the name of this coast?

Answer: the Emerald Coast

The Emerald Coast is so named because the ultra-white sand under the waters of the Gulf of Mexico gives the water an emerald green appearance. Located on the Emerald Coast are many popular tourist destinations including Pensacola Beach, Gulf Breeze, Navarre Beach, Fort Walton Beach, Panama City Beach and Mexico Beach.
4. If you look at a map of Florida that names the different coasts, you will find four different coasts along the Atlantic Ocean. We've already discussed two of them. Which of Florida's coasts can be found between Miami and Palm Beach? Here's a hint, think money.

Answer: the Gold Coast

The name for this coast seems to have originated in the post World War I era when there was an large increase in population that made land as valuable as gold. One might even surmise the name is somehow tied to the large number of the rich and famous who live along the Gold Coast.
5. What was the original name for the Suncoast?

Answer: the Pirate Coast

The area now called Florida's Suncoast was originally called the Pirate Coast. The west coast of Florida had been raided by Jose Gaspar, AKA Gasparilla, and Black Caesar, a Hatian pirate. Gaspar used the area around Charlotte Harbor as his home base from which he and his crew had plundered over 400 ships. On the day he was going to retire, he left the spoils of his pirating with ten of his crew, totaling 20 chests of treasure, and persued what he thought was a wealthy British merchant ship. It turned out to be an American ship, the USS Enterprise and a trap. Gasparilla's ship, the Floridablanca, was sunk and he died on that day in 1821.

The crewmembers left on shore witnessed this and spent the next few days burrying the treasure, which has been estimated to be worth 30 million dollars, along the banks of Peace River. Peace River empties into Charlotte Harbor.

The treasure has never been found.
6. This coast is named for the large number of Spanish galleons that have sunk in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean just off shore.

Answer: the Treasure Coast

Florida's Treasure Coast is roughly described as stretching from the Indian River County/Brevard County line south to near Stuart, Florida. The Treasure Coast was so named because a number of Spanish galleons from the 1715 treasure fleet sank off this coast. Artifacts from these wrecks are still being recovered.
7. The Lee Island Coast is next. Thinking of the name and what the words mean, where would you find the Lee Island Coast?

Answer: from Sanibel Island north to Cayo Costa

The windward side of Florida is the side along the Atlantic Ocean. The leeward side of Florida is the side along the peninsula on the Gulf of Mexico. Armed with this information, it can be deduced that the Lee Island Coast is along the Gulf of Mexico. The only description given including islands in or along the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida is "from Sanibel Island north to Cayo Costa."
8. The next coast is the home to many of Florida's Gulf Coast beaches and tourist destinations. This is one of the regions where people lay out and get a great Florida tan. Which of Florida's named coasts includes the beautiful beaches from Tarpon Springs south through Venice?

Answer: the Suncoast

This area was previously known as Florida's Pirate Coast since the large bays were the home to pirates that roamed this area. The name was changed to the Suncoast to better reflect the areas greatest resource, the beautiful sun drenched beaches. This coast may be extend all the way to Naples, Florida by those who do not recognize the Lee Island Coast.
9. What is the name given to Florida's coast that can be found from Tarpon Springs in the south all the way north to the Big Bend region? It has few beaches but many coastal marshes and mangroves. Here you can view manatees, dolphins, alligators and many species of birds.

Answer: the Nature Coast

The Nature Coast covers Florida's Gulf Coasts of Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, Levy, Dixie, Taylor, Jefferson and Wakulla Counties. Most of this area has few if any beaches. The Nature Coast is considered to be typically deeply Southern in its culture.
10. The last but not the least of Florida's named coasts can be found from Cape San Blas east to Dog Island and Carabelle. What would be the name of this, the last of Florida's named coasts?

Answer: the Forgotten Coast

The Forgotten Coast is one of the two not mentioned in the Wikipedia source, but it is named on "The International Travel Map of Florida." It covers the coastline of Gulf and Franklin Counties in Florida's Panhandle along the Gulf of Mexico. This coast includes Saint Georges Island and Dog Island along with Apalachicola Bay.
