Answer: manatees

This is one of the best places in the state to view the endangered West Indian manatee. These gentle creatures, sometimes called sea cows, were mistaken by early sailors for mermaids. This park is the infirmary for injured female manatees, and is the permanent home for nine of these gentle giants. Here, they can be observed both above and below water. Sometimes, while in the underwater observation point called The Fish Bowl it feels as if the manatees are watching us. There is also a zoo of native Florida animals and one hippo.
6. The people who were standing next to us in the Fish Bowl told us about an interesting tourist attraction not too far to the south. They said that if we wanted to see mermaids, this was the place to go. So we are headed south on US 19 to our next stop. Where were we headed?

Answer: Weeki Wachee Springs

Weeki Wachee Springs and Buccaneer Bay, near Spring Hill is the home of these world famous mermaid shows. The park was opened in the autumn of 1947. In its hey day in the 1960s, the park saw 500,000 visitors a year. The most famous visitor was Elvis Presley who visited on July 30, 1961 while on a shooting break from the movie 'Follow That Dream'. One admission price gives you access to their river cruise, the mermaid shows and the water park, Buccaneer Bay.

The following were all shot, at least in part, at the springs: 'Full Grown Men', 'I'd do Anything', 'Kids Can Cook Too', 'Real Premonition', 'The Spot', 'The Average Angler', 'Mystery Hunters', 'The Paul O'Grady Show', 'Penn & Teller: Off the Deep End' and 'The Simple Life 2'.

Answer: Legoland

8. We are getting a bit tired of driving, so we head south of Tampa Bay to two of the more popular of Florida's gulf coast islands, both very close together and near Fort Myers. This particular destination is famous for having an abundance of sea shells. Here we will be able to just veg out on the beach, collect sea shells and watch the wildlife. Where will we spend the next five days?

Answer: Sanibel and Captiva

Sanibel and Captiva Islands are barrier islands on the west coast of Florida, near Fort Myers. Sanibel and Captiva are famous for their beautiful beaches, abundance of sea shells and wildlife. Some of the shells that are commonly found on Sanibel's and Captiva's beaches are: coquinas, scallops, whelks, sand dollars, and other deeper-water shells.

Some of the wildlife that we expect to see are: pelicans, herons, egrets, anhingas, terns, sandpipers, seagulls, American alligators, one rare American crocodile.
9. After our relaxing five day stay at our last destination we decide we want to see a lot more of Florida's wild life, so we head down I-75 and east across Alligator Alley into the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. We are headed to a national park, but which one?

Answer: Everglades National Park

Located west of Homestead, the Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. With about 2.3 million acres (930,780.7 hectares) you can find walking, hiking, biking and canoeing trails which allow you to observe alligators, American crocodiles, Florida panthers, West Indian manatees and countless bird species. Nearby you can find air boat rides, swamp safaris, botanical parks and history museums.
10. Since we have explored this much of Florida, we decided to drive to the southernmost point in the continental United States. We argued about where this is. My brother said it was on Key Largo. Is that correct?

Answer: No

Key West is the southernmost city in the Continental United States and the southern ending point for US Route 1, State Route A1A. There is a marker stating it is only 90 miles to Cuba. There is so much to do and see in Key West it would be way too much to put in this small space. WARNING, don't go during Fantasy Fest in late October unless you really want to party.
