Likely the island's most famous native son, Napoleon Bonaparte, was born in Ajaccio, Corsica's largest settlement, in 1769.

While the English name, Drake Passage, comes from English seafarer and pirate Sir Francis Drake, the Spanish and Latin American name, Mar de Hoces, is named for Spanish navigator Francisco de Hoces. Drake Passage forms a connection between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The passage is a common route for ships to take.

These islands are about six miles apart in the northern part of the Bering Strait and are separated by the International Date Line, which gives them their nicknames: Tomorrow Island (Big Diomede) and Yesterday Island (Little Diomede). "Big" is a possession of Siberian Russia, while "Little" is a part of Alaska, USA.
