Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First, a few softballs (we'll get harder towards the end): The Civil War battle of Shiloh happened in this state:

Answer: Tennessee

Although Pittsburgh Landing and Savannah, Tennessee both lie nearby, the famous battle took its name from a small evangelical church that found itself in the heart of the fighting.
2. Slightly more difficult: The Civil War battle of Pea Ridge was fought in the following state:

Answer: Arkansas

Generally considered the only notable Civil War conflict in the "Land of Opportunity."
3. Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Tennessee Williams was born in the following state:

Answer: Mississippi

"Tennessee" Williams just sounds better, doesn't it?
4. The debate for the "birthplace of the blues" has raged for decades. Blues legend Leadbelly was often quoted as saying, "The blues came from ___________________, loping like a mule." To which state did Leadbelly attribute the "birthplace of the blues?"

Answer: Texas

This was really 50/50, if you know anything about the blues.
5. Let's take the Hollywood detour: In which city were veteran actors Kathy Bates and Morgan Freeman born?

Answer: Memphis, Tennessee

I left Cybil Shepherd off the list because I wanted to ask you about "actors."
6. This state has never produced an NCAA Division I national champion in any sport (if you honestly count consensus titles):

Answer: Mississippi

Lots of sports, lots of national champs. But despite Mississippi (Ole Miss), Mississippi State and Southern Mississippi, that state has never had a consensus national title winner in anything!
7. Dolly Parton built her self-based theme park "Dollywood" in which Tennessee town?

Answer: Pigeon Forge

Husbands beware: it's one outlet mall after another.
8. This city is home to the Aquarium of the Americas, from which visitors can purchase tickets to ride a boat on the Mississippi River to the Audubon Zoo:

Answer: New Orleans, Louisiana

The Aquarium of the Americas boasts on of the world's finest collections of marine life from the Gulf of Mexico, naturally.
9. The Middle Woodland archaeological excavation named Poverty Point can be found in which modern day Southern state?

Answer: Louisiana

The site is in the extreme northeast corner of the state, not far from the Arkansas & Mississippi borders.
10. This rather small town on the Mississippi River hosts the rather large King Biscuit Blues Festival each year:

Answer: Helena, Arkansas

Although it's one of the longest running of the larger blues festivals, financial pressures have the King Biscuit in limbo at the time of posting this question.
