Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Slay bashful
Answer: Kilcoy
Slay (kill) + bashful (coy) = Kilcoy
Kilcoy is a small town in South-East Queensland, 94 km north west of Brisbane. Originally called Hopetown after one of the early settlers, in 1907 it was renamed Kilcoy after the Scottish town of the same name. The town has a bloodthirsty history following the 1842 massacre of local aborigines caused by them eating poisoned flour.
Cape Tribulation is on a headland near the Daintree Rainforest National Park and Cooktown. It was in this area that the Endeavour broke down, hence its name. James Cook wrote: "I name this point Cape Tribulation, because here began all my troubles."
Despite the remote location it is a popular destination with tourists because of its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree River and rainforest.
3. Miss Contrary political division
Answer: Maryborough
Miss Contrary (Mary, [or mary mary]) + political division (borough) = Maryborough.
Maryborough is a city on the Mary River and in the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland. Original residents the Gubbi Gubbi and Wakka peoples, were caught up in the 1842 Kilcoy massacre and also the Whiteside Station slaying five years later.
Maryborough was the major port and closest town to a coal mine at Burrum. It was classified as a city in 1905.
Found inland from Townsville, Charters Towers was founded in the 1870s as a result of the gold mining boom. During the height of the boom, Charters Towers was the largest Queensland city outside the capital, Brisbane, and had its own stock exchange. After the initial gold rush the supply dwindled and the mines were closed, thinking them exhausted. However, after an 89 year hiatus, they were reopened and gold once again successfully mined.
5. Sky arc Coast
Answer: Rainbow Beach
Sky arc (rainbow) + coast (beach) = Rainbow Beach
Rainbow Beach is a small town in the Wide Bay-Burnett region. Being the closest city to Fraser Island, tourism is its main industry. Just north of the town are dunes of coloured sands, from which the town derives its name.
In 1973, and empty cargo ship 'The Cherry Venture' ran aground during a storm and couldn't be refloated. The rusted hull of the ship was in itself another tourism draw-card and the propeller is on display in a park near the beach.
Shute Harbour is 10km east of Airlie Beach in the tropical Whitsundays. It was once a busy port for ferries and seaplanes travelling between the islands, but most companies are now based in Airlie Beach itself. It is still a busy harbour for small water craft. Shute Harbour remains a popular holiday destination with hotels, camping sites and the Conway National Park.
Nevil Shute was an English novelist who moved to Australia. Some of his works include 'A Town Like Alice' and 'On the Beach'.
7. Put down Actress Vivien
Answer: Laidley
Put down (laid) + Actress Vivien (Leigh) = Laidley (laid Leigh)
Laidley is a small town in south-east Queensland in an area known as the Lockyer Valley. The entire area is known for its agriculture and for this reason, Laidley has the nickname 'Queensland's Country Garden'. On the route from Ipswich to Toowoomba, the town originally began as a wagon stop and sheep grazing before becoming a town.
8. Black birds Tree abode
Answer: Crows Nest
Black birds (crows) + Tree abode (nest) = Crows Nest
Crows Nest is a town on the Dulla lands near Toowoomba on the Darling Downs. There are two schools of thought over the name. One is that it is derived from the aborigine word Tookoogandanna, which means 'home of the crows'. The other thought is that it is named after an aborigine called Jimmy Crow who lived in a hollow tree and helped the early white settlers.
9. Dog house value
Answer: Kenilworth
Dog house (kennel) + value (worth) = Kenilworth (kennel worth)
Kenilworth is a town on the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane. The area is well known for its main industry is dairy farming. However, with its proximity to the Kenilworth State Forest, art galleries, cheese making and history museums, tourism is the other industry of Kenilworth.
10. Reptile Atoll
Answer: Lizard Island
Reptile (lizard) + Atoll (island) = Lizard Island
Lizard Island is a national park, north-east of Cooktown on the Great Barrier Reef. It was so named by James Cook because of the number of goannas there. Today it is a holiday resort with white beaches, snorkelling, hiking, water sports and diving.
