Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2010, as a comic strip, he appeared in over 1900 newspapers worldwide. He has a red beard, a horned helmet and a son named Hamlet, who is he?

Answer: Hagar the Horrible

Created by Dik Browne, Hagar is a dig at Scandinavian life during the Viking Age. Appearing overweight and scruffy, Hagar looks more like a caveman than a Viking and whilst he may be a fierce warrior he is also a family man with a soft underbelly. He is supported (bossed if the truth be known) by his large framed wife Helga and his highly intelligent son Hamlet. The name Hagar the Horrible is an adaptation of Dik Browne's nickname, bestowed upon him by his sons, of Hagar the Terrible.

2. Mel Blanc, The Man of a Thousand Voices, came up with a trademark laugh for which blue character with a spiky, red hairdo?

Answer: Woody Woodpecker

Woody Woodpecker is a cartoon character who was voiced by Mel Blanc in the first two cartoons. Woody Woodpecker has a recognisable laugh that is similar to the call of the pileated woodpecker. For a time after Blanc left, archived sounds were used to reproduce the laugh. Subsequently, many actors have taken over voicing Woody Woodpecker.

3. Archie Andrews, a perpetual 16 year old redhead first appeared in comics in 1941. The plot line was driven by a love triangle between Archie and two girls who competed for his affections. What was the brunette girlfriend's name?

Answer: Veronica

Archie was first interested in blonde Betty Cooper who thought of him as nothing more than annoying but when Veronica, the brunette came to Riverdale, Archie switched his attention causing Betty to be jealous. This jealously lasted 70 years until the comic editors announced Archie would marry one of them but this is not revealed before Archie is killed off in 2014. In 1982, Archie briefly dated Cheryl Blossom but she only lasted two years as a character as she was considered a bit promiscuous, therefore somewhat unsuitable for a children's audience. In 2009, Archie secretly dated Valerie Smith a black haired bass player from "Josie and the Pussycats".

4. Which Swedish redhead, created by Astrid Lindgren, lives with her monkey "Mr. Nilsson" and her horse?

Answer: Pippi Longstocking

Pippi Longstocking is known as Pippi Langstrump in her native Sweden. She is 9 years old and is incredibly strong, even able to pick up her horse with just one hand. She has adventures with her friends Tommy and Annika. Interestingly, the actress that played Pippi in the 1969 Swedish television series was named Inger Nilsson. Of course she was no relation to the monkey.

5. Australia's longest-running comic strip was created in the early 1920s by Jimmy Bancks and it follows the adventures of which red-haired, pre-pubescent mischief?

Answer: Ginger Meggs

Meggs is the typical Australia larrikin, loves his cricket, hates going to school, and spends a good chunk of his time racing his billy-cart down impossible steep descents with disastrous results. He spends most of his time with his best friend Benny Hooper trying to avoid getting beat up by either Tiger Kelly, the neighbourhood bully, or Jugears Jonson, the school bully. The strips over the years have shown the Meggs family battle through the Great Depression, witness the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and meeting the great Sir Donald Bradman. Ginger was a regular caricature on Australian planes during World War II and his profile was used to headline road safety campaigns during the 1950s.

6. The red-headed doll, Raggedy Ann, was created by author Johnny Gruelle. How did he choose her name?

Answer: It's a combination of two poems by James Whitcomb Riley.

Johnny Gruelle took the titles of two James Whitcomb Riley poems, "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphant Annie", and used them for his doll. He first created the doll and patented it in 1915. He later incorporated the character in the book, "Raggedy Ann Stories". Johnny Gruelle next introduced Raggedy Ann's brother, Raggedy Andy, in the sequel, "Raggedy Andy Stories". Raggedy Ann has red yarn for hair and a triangle-shaped nose.

7. When she was sixteen years-old, Alyssa Milano is said to have been part of the inspiration for which red headed Disney princess?

Answer: Ariel

Only Merida and Ariel are red heads. The inspiration for Ariel came from Alyssa, Ariel animator Glen Kean's wife, and model-comedian Sherri Stoner. Stoner actually provided live action references for the animators including swimming in a pool. Stage actress Jodi Benson provided both the speaking and singing voice for Ariel in the original "The Little Mermaid" (1989) and all subsequent incarnations of the character in films or TV. For her work as Ariel and as Barbie in "Toy Story 2" and "Toy Story 3" she was named a Disney Legend in 2011.

8. I hope this question is not to "Woof" on you as what is the character in the "Tweenies" who is known for his red and yellow hair?

Answer: Doodles

All the names listed are characters in the children's TV show the "Tweenies", with Doodles being the only dog listed and he has red and yellow hair. The "Tweenies" first aired in the UK on the CBBC channel in 1999 and went on to show a total of 390 episodes. The "Tweenies" has been shown across the world by various TV networks, such as Nick JR in the US. Doodles was acted by Alan Riley and was voiced by Justin Fletcher who also provided the voice for the character Jake in the "Tweenies". Justin has gone on to provide delight to other young children from starring as Mr Tumble in the TV show " Something Special" and voicing the character Shaun, in the "Shaun the Sheep" TV show and 2015 movie.

9. In the original 1962-63 Hanna-Barbera animated television show, "The Jetsons" is about a nuclear family set in an unspecified date in the future. Jane Jetson, the red-headed wife of the protagonist George is shown walking the family dog Astro in the opening credits?

Answer: false

"The Jetsons" is a counter-point to another Hanna-Barbera cartoon family, "The Flintstones". Set in the unspecified future, the show tells the story of George (40), wife Jane (33), daughter Judy (16), son Elroy (6 1/2), and family pet Astro, who talks but every word starts with a growling "R" sound. Rosie the Robot is also an integral family member. George is a bit of a klutz, his many mistakes at work and home driving the plot lines. In the closing credits, it is George who takes Astro for a walk on an elevated travellator and the whole exercise routine goes pear-shaped when Astro spots a cat.

10. Who is the shy, long-suffering assistant of Dr. Bunsen Honeydew on "The Muppet Show"?

Answer: Beaker

Kermit the Frog once said that "If somebody has to get hurt, it's almost always Beaker.", which is probably the most apt way to describe our hapless lab assistant. Even his crop of flaming red hair gives the impression that his head is perennially on fire. Dr. Honeydew's experiments have the alarming capacity to go haywire which means that being by his side comes with all forms of dangers. He's been cloned, blown up, shrunk, and made invisible. On an episode of "The Fantastic Miss Piggy Show" he was electrocuted and his eyes lit up. Poor Beaker.
