Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which date in the Christmas Calendar is celebrated as El Dia de los Reyes (Three Kings Day) in Spanish and Latin American countries?

Answer: 6th January

Answer 6th January, the Feast of the Epiphany in the Christian calendar. It is the day that Spanish and Latin American children get their presents from the three Wise Men. Remember the Twelve Days of Christmas? Well, the Epiphany corresponds with the 12th (Twelfth Night).

2. If you were in a restaurant in the Mississippi Delta region, you might see Koolickles on the menu. What do you think they would be?

Answer: Dill pickles brined in Kool-Aid

Popsicles made with Kool-Aid are real, and maybe Kohlrabi fritters and Okra kebabs, but Koolickles are definitely food items. They are dill pickles cut into chunks and brined in Kool-Aid (powder mixed with water) which turn a beautiful red, and are quite common in the Delta area of Mississippi. Apparently they were invented after someone had tried dipping pickles into the dry powder!

3. Understanding world urbanization trends is important for sustainable planning. In 2014, the United Nations released projections on how urban populations would evolve. Which of the following was not one of the projections?

Answer: India, Russia and Japan would have the largest increases in urban dwellers.

If the 2014 projections were correct, by the year 2030 there will be a least 41 mega-cities, with at least ten million inhabitants each. By 2045, the world's urban population will have surpassed six billion. By 2050, almost 70% of the world's population will be living in urban areas.

As we reach these milestones, it will be interesting, and more than a little scary, to see whether the 2014 projections have come true.

Japan and Russia were among the few countries expected to lose urban dwellers. India, China and Nigeria were projected to have the largest increases, with three alone accounting for approximately 37% of the total urban population growth.

4. Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (1884-1920) was a master painter and sculptor, however his work was not appreciated in his lifetime. Why was this?

Answer: His nudes and portraits were elongated and simplified

Modigliani died young, he was only 35 years old. He never lived to see the success of his work which is now very popular and brings high prices.

He was influenced by African sculpture and its clear linear forms. Modigliani lived at a time of great artistic change. Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Futurism all can be seen in his work, but he chose not to fit into any category. I always wonder how his work would have developed if he had lived longer.

The Guggenheim Museum in New York has a collection of Modigliani's work that I would love to see.

5. Man has been drawing maps, probably since the earliest days, to help him navigate his world and to give guidance to others. What do the oldest surviving maps portray?

Answer: Star patterns in the night sky

The earliest maps (14,500 BCE) have been found on the walls of the Lascaux caves in France. These show part of the night sky and include the Summer Triangle (Vega, Deneb and Altair) and the Pleiades. It's likely that this chart provided a useful directional guide when planning a journey or a hunting trip. The most famous drawings in the cave are of animals such as buffalo, which would have provided food and hides.
A clay tablet showing the layout of Nippur in Babylonia is dated to about 1400 BCE, while there are Chinese maps that have survived since 5th Century BCE. These maps show river systems and locations of stands of useful timber.

6. Pepi II was a pharaoh of the Sixth Dynasty in Egypt's Old Kingdom. I guess fly swatters weren't invented yet, so what did Pepi II do to keep those pesky critters away?

Answer: Smeared his slaves' naked bodies with honey.

Is this where the saying, "You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar," came from?

Pepi II succeeded to the throne at the very young age of six. By all accounts, he was Egypt's longest reigning pharaoh, though there is speculation as to whether his rule lasted 64 or 94 years.

Pepi II married his sister, Neith, which was considered acceptable to keep the bloodline sacred.

7. In which Canadian province are the most watermelons sold during the CFL (Canadian Football League) season?

Answer: Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan "Rider" fans are also known as melonheads. They carve football helmets out of watermelons and wear them to cheer on their team. The Riders are so popular nationally, that for the 2013 Grey Cup (national championship) to be played in Calgary, Alberta, grocery stores special-ordered 6,000-10,000 watermelons for the day. They were sold out in hours.
To all you Aussies out there, if you see a young lady wearing a green and white jersey you don't recognize, that would be my former assistant manager Jodi. We sent her home on the plane wearing Rider gear because she became such a great fan - and she was proud of it.

8. If you enjoy the water as much as I do this question will be an easy one for you. What does the acronym SIT stand for?

Answer: Surface interval time

Surface Interval Time is the time spent at the surface between dives to reduce the nitrogen levels in the body.
Being from Rhode Island the ocean has always been my first love and while I both sky and scuba dive, scuba is my fav... My favorite location (so far) is Sherkston Shores in Canada. A limestone quarry flooded leaving everything there. The houses, cars and the train engine! It's a cake dive only 90 feet so with the correct SIT time you can make two dives in one day VIS (visibility) is crystal and its so cool to swim in and out of the buildings and up to the train...

10. Which type of character do 'The Magician's Nephew' (C.S. Lewis), 'Stardust' (Neil Gaiman), and 'Equal Rites' (Terry Pratchett) have in common?

Answer: Witches

In Narnia, why is there a lamppost in the middle of a wood? It's the question that 'The Magician's Nephew' answered. It also explained how the White Witch came to be a part of Narnia. 'Equal Rites' was the Discworld novel that introduced the witch Granny Weatherwax - the first of many she appeared in.

The Lilim were a trio of unnamed witches in 'Stardust'. They wanted to capture the star and eat her heart in order to preserve their youth.
