Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Containing many of the taller mountains in the alps, which range contains the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa (amongst others)?

Answer: Pennine Alps

Found along the Swiss-Italian border, the Pennines contain some of the most stunning Alpine areas and feature some of its most iconic peaks. Zermatt, Switzerland can be found here, and that's probably the ideal location to survey the Matterhorn from below-- that peak is likely the most famous of the Alps and you'd probably know it from the Paramount Pictures film logo and from being featured on Toblerone packaging.

Its highest peak, Dufourspitze, is found on Monte Rosa, the massif between Valais and Piedmont.
2. Found mostly in Northern Italy, what Alpine range also contains a small part of France's Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region?

Answer: Ligurian Alps

Named for the boundary they create between Piedmont, Italy and the coastal region of Liguria, the Ligurian Alps are the southwestern edge of the mountains and lead onward into France. This reach's highest peak, Punta Marguareis, is actually on the French-Italian border.

The Ligurian region of Italy, to the south, is less known for the mountains than it is for its coastline. Edging onto the Mediterranean, Liguria snakes from the French Riviera all the way down to Genoa and La Spezia, including the coastal cliffs of Cinque-Terre (bordering Tuscany).

The Ligurian Alps also border the much larger Apennine range which extends into the major portion of peninsular Italy.
3. Which Swiss Alpine region contains the towns of Grindelwald, Interlaken, and Lauterbrunnen, but not the nation's capital?

Answer: Bernese Alps

Weirdly, the capital city of Bern is quite a distance northwest of the Bernese Alps, which sit closer to the south of Switzerland, just a touch east of the French border. The Bernese Alps exemplify the mountains of Europe with many of its greatest peaks and the most traditional Swiss villages within the region.

Here, you can find Jungfraujoch and the Eiger, some of the highest reachable areas in Switzerland, at least for the public, since there's a train station at the former at 3,454m.
4. Part of the Southern Limestone Alps, what Northern Italian range are also known as the 'Pale Mountains'?

Answer: The Dolomites

Named after the mineral 'dolomite', found in the Alps here, the Dolomites make up the northeastern border of Italy and pass along near cities like Bergamo and Verona. The Olympic city of Cortina d'Ampezzo can be found there, notably. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dolomites are one of many unique landscapes of Italy (especially considering how varied they are from the south of the country) and actually split into more than two dozen smaller ranges within.

They are, of course, known for being ideal peaks for outdoor sports, especially alpine skiing.
5. What French Alp extension includes the city of Grenoble and the Belledonne Range?

Answer: Dauphiné Alps

The Dauphiné Alps are in the western reach of the Alps as they peter off into France and these particular mountains lead towards Grenoble, a city which has called itself 'The Capital of the Alps' for many years. To the west of Grenoble is the Vercors Massif, but the Belledonne Range makes up the east.

The area is so well-known for skiing and peak alpine conditions that Grenoble was the host of the tenth Winter Olympics (in 1968)-- it was the fifth city in the mountain range to do so and the second in France (after Chamonix).
6. Which of these locations is named after the highest point in the Alps on the border between France, Italy, and Switzerland?

Answer: Mont Blanc Massif

The Mont Blanc Massif, one of the highest spots in the Alps and home to (duh) Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe, is known for its glaciers and quaint surroundings. Much of the area wasn't deeply-explored or scaled until long after people started using the area for rural activities and, eventually, tourism, but it was occupied by Romans at one point and its valleys were used to move through to the coast. Seventeen of the summits in the massif are over 4,000m and eleven of those are referred to as the independent peaks.

The region is home to the Olympic city of Chamonix.
7. What glacier-laden stretch of the Alps contains the easternmost peak in the chain to top out higher than 4,000m?

Answer: Bernina Range

Found in the southeast of Switzerland on the Italian border, the Bernina Range is small, but contains Piz Bernina, the easternmost peak rising above the 4,000m mark (it's at 4,048m) and considered one of the most isolated high Alps in the whole chain.

The Bernina Range is actually part of the larger Rhaetian Alps region which also extends northward into Tyrol in Austria and southward into Lombardy, Italy. The Berninas are best known for their glaciers; they sit at a point in the Alps prone to glaciation due to their height.

These mountains are also considered part of the Western Limestone Alps, even if they're further east than many of the alpine regions we would consider characteristic of the chain.
8. Home to Grossglockner, Austria's tallest peak, what range in the Central Eastern Alps is south of Salzburg?

Answer: High Tauern

The High Tauern found east of the Austrian-Italian border comprises the peaks just south of the Salzach Valley, separating it from the German border to the north. Its highest peak, Grossglockner, rises to 3,798m, a fair bit shy of the taller peaks to the west.

Although it's much less frequented than other regions due to its relatively foreboding landscape (which is far from ideal for access), it does contain the largest protected region in Central Europe in High Tauern National Park, much of which is unspoiled by all forms of human interference.
9. Which of these Alpine ranges crosses into Slovenia?

Answer: Julian Alps

Part of the Southern Limestone Alps, the Julian Alps may not be the easternmost of the chain (that would be the Pohorje Massif), but they do contain Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia (at a height of 2,864m), home to the nation's only protected National Park, established in 1981.

The name of this range is Italian because it also stretches into Northeastern Italy. Named after Caesar, this range is considered more rugged than most of the Alps to the northwest. The closest major city would likely be Trieste, Italy, to the south.
10. Taking in several ranges, what German region of the Alps contains the Zugspitze?

Answer: Bavarian Alps

The Bavarian Alps make up a great deal of the peaks in Southern Germany's mountain region where it borders Tyrolian Austria. This is your typical fairy tale mountain region; several of the towns and villages here are known for their tendency towards beautiful castles (Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, for instance) and deep forests. Zugspitze, the tallest mountain in Germany, is found near the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the Austrian border.
