Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which fertile region forms part of the border between Minnesota, North Dakota and Manitoba?

Answer: Red River Valley

The four main population centres in this region are Moorhead in Minnesota, and Grand Forks and Fargo in North Dakota in the United States sector, and Winnipeg in Manitoba, across the border in Canada. The area is part of the Glacial Lake Agassis, which is one of the flattest expanses of land on Earth and when this is coupled with the adverse gradient of the Red River, ice jams and spring thaws, it makes the area prone to some severe flooding. Despite this it possesses a rich soil that is perfect for agriculture, especially wheat and, as a result, is economically important to all the communities in the region.

This question gushed from the fertile mind of Team Red's pollucci19.
2. In Canada, which central Albertan city was founded by Leonard Gaetz in 1882?

Answer: Red Deer

Gaetz moved to the banks of the Red Deer River following his retirement as a Methodist minister and bought much of the land surrounding his homestead. As the population grew, he donated land to the Calgary and Edmonton Railway so that they could build a bridge over the river. The first train from Calgary to Edmonton passed through Red Deer in 1891 and the development of this line greatly helped with the growth of the city.
Gaetz also founded the Westerner Park at the south end of the city, home to the annual rodeo, "Westerner Days" and ice hockey team, Red Deer Rebels. who play at the Westerner Park Centrium, built in 1991 and host to several well known musical acts such as Tragically Hip, Elton John, Rush and Snoop Dogg.
The main highway through Red Deer is Gaetz Avenue, named in Gaetz's honour, as is Gaetz Lakes, Alberta's oldest federal migratory bird sanctuary.

This question galloped into the quiz from Team Red member 480154st.
3. Which of the following country combinations border the Red Sea?

Answer: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Israel, Jordan and Yemen

The Red Sea is bordered by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea. It is 2250 km long and 355 km wide at its widest and is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, separating Africa and Asia. It is the world's northernmost tropical sea. It is called "Red" because of a cyanobacteria called Trichodesmium erythraeum, which is found in this sea. When the algae die off, huge clumps, often miles wide at a time, appear to turn the blueish/greenish colour of the ocean to a reddish-brown.

This question was sifted through the reddish-brown algae by Team Red member 1nn1.
4. Red Square is recognized throughout the world for its monuments and beautiful buildings but which of these would you *NOT* find in Red Square?

Answer: Alexander Column

Red Square received its name from the Russian word for "beautiful", not the color of bricks used, as some may think. It's the origin of Moscow's roads, city blocks and highways. With the exception of military, police or government official vehicles, cars are prohibited so it is very tourist-friendly. The State Historical Museum stands at the northern end directly opposite St. Basil's Cathedral, while GUM (former State Department Store now privatized) is on the east with Lenin's Tomb on the west. The Kremlin and Red Square were recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.

Alexander Column (or Alexandrian Column) is located in Palace Square, St. Petersburg, Russia.

This question was squared through Moscow by Team Red member sally0malley.
5. On a trip around Australia's Red Centre, what feature would you *NOT* see?

Answer: Tessellated pavement

Australia's Red Centre is the large, dry, dusty area in the middle of the continent. It is as well known for its red soil as it is for its searing temperatures. While it has no distinct boundaries it encompasses Alice Springs and parts of Northern Territory and South Australia, however most of the sites are in the NT. The soil is red due to a high accumulation of iron oxides, left after extreme weathering. This soil is also very poor in nutrients and when combined with the temperatures and low rainfall, the area is a desert.

The Tessellated pavement is a geological feature at Eaglehawk Nest in Tasmania.

This question was retrieved from way down under by Team Red member leith90.
6. Red Rocks Park is renown for its massive sandstone outcrops as well as an amphitheatre built within rock that is 6,450 ft (1,970 m) above sea level. What state capital is located ten miles east of Red Rocks Park and has an elevation about 1,200 ft (366 m) less?

Answer: Denver, Colorado

Red Rocks Park is owned and maintained by the city of Denver and in 1990 it was U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The rocks from the park are believed to have been formed more than 290 million years ago. Red Rocks Park was previously called Garden of the Angels and it was featured as the starting and ending point of "The Amazing Race 9" which aired in 2006.

This question was dug up from the Red Rocks of Colorado by Team Red member Triviaballer.
7. Which city in the Seattle metropolitan area in Washington shares its name with a hair colour?

Answer: Auburn

In the 2010 United States Census, Auburn had a population of 70,180, and was ranked the fifteenth-largest city in the state of Washington. It was originally named 'Slaughter' but this somewhat unsettling name was changed just two years later in 1893 in honour of the Auburn in New York. In a confluence of colours, the principal rivers flowing through Auburn are the White and Green Rivers.

This question was rained in from Seattle by Team Red member malik24.
8. The rose-coloured sandstone around which site in Jordan has been occupied since prehistoric times?

Answer: Petra

The area of Petra was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. It was the location of a battle involving local women and led by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) to defeat Ottoman forces in 1917. Its area includes a series of monasteries, temples and tombs and is one of the most visited tourist areas in the Raqmu region in Jordan.

This question was unearthed by Team Red member VegemiteKid.
9. The town of Redruth is located in which English county, which is known as Kernow in its ancient language?

Answer: Cornwall

The name of Redruth comes from the Cornish words of 'Rhyd' and 'ruth', which translate as 'red ford'. Perhaps surprisingly, it is 'rhyd' which means 'ford' and 'ruth' which means red. Kernow has its own flag - a white cross on a black background. Redruth itself is where Mick Fleetwood, drummer for the band Fleetwood Mac, was born.

This question was created by west country girl and Team Red member rossian.
10. South America is home to a geological marvel called Vinicunca, or Rainbow Mountain. Which country is home to this multicolored mountain, which is adjacent to the breathtaking Red Valley?

Answer: Peru

It wasn't until the mid-2010s that Vinicunca became a tourist attraction since prior to that, the mountain had been covered in ice. Despite the fact that tourists must reach the mountain by hiking, the multicolored peak attracts many tourists. The mountain's colors include red, yellow, pink, purple, and turquoise, and they are best seen on sunny days. The colors come from the different minerals that make up the soil.

This question was pitched in from Peru by Team Red member tiffanyram.
