Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which red flower was featured on the reverse of a Canadian quarter (25 cents) in 2004?

Answer: Poppy

The 2004 quarter was the world's first coloured coin in general circulation and the design was repeated in 2008 and 2010. Poppies are well known for their association to Flanders Field especially and WWI in general as a symbol of remembrance and it was for this reason that the Canadian coins were minted.

This question bloomed in the mind of Team Red member 480154st.
2. Which strikingly red flower, endemic to Australia, is the State flower of New South Wales and the nickname of the state's Rugby Union Team?

Answer: Waratah

The Waratah is a native to the South-Eastern parts of Australia. Most well known is the Telopea speciosissima- with its bright red flower that can grow to 15cm in diameter. While many regard it as a single flower, it is actually a densely packed head of small flowers, mimicking a single large bloom. It was declared the state flower of New South Wales in 1962.

This question was potted by Red Team member leith90.
3. Known for its beautiful red flowers, which flower with the species name 'Salvia elegans' could in other words be described as a person much-knowledged of a tropical fruit?

Answer: Pineapple sage

The pineapple sage, also known as the tangerine sage, is native to the regions of Mexico and Guatemala. The plants grow through the summer and flourish and bloom in the late summer and early autumn, and do indeed have a pleasant pineappley smell. These plants attract hummingbirds, butterflies and humans alike.

This fragrant option was created by Team Red's malik24.
4. Often associated with death in Japanese legend, which scarlet flowering plant is also known as the 'spider lily'?

Answer: Lycoris

Hanakotoba is the Japanese form of the language of flowers. The Lycoris radiata symbolizes abandonment, longing, loss and lost memories. One legend says that if you meet a person that you won't see again these flowers grow along the path. They're also often used in funerals.

This floral tribute was written by Team Red member sally0malley.
5. More than sixty species exist of a common red annual flower whose name is derived from Greek words meaning 'unfading flower'. What is this flower that the Aztecs cultivated into a grain for consumption?

Answer: Amaranthus

In addition to amaranthus grain, the various amaranthus species are also commonly used as decorations and eaten as leaf vegetables. While many of the species are red there are also variants that are green, gold and purple. Some amaranthus species are considered undesirable and have received the unfortunate nickname 'pigweed'.

This question was carefully tended by Team Red member Triviaballer.
6. 'Scarlet Cardinal', 'Hollandia' and 'Burning Heart' are all red varieties of which flower, associated with spring?

Answer: Tulip

The second variety might have given you an additional clue, since tulips are closely linked to The Netherlands, or Holland as it is sometimes called. The varieties listed are different shades of red, with 'Scarlet Cardinal' being an orange/red, 'Hollandia' red and 'Burning Heart' a cream/red.

This question was cultivated in the mind of Team Red member Rossian.

Answer: Swan River

There are over 100 species of the Swan River Pea and all but two of these are found in Western Australia and these are generally in the south western region of the state. The plants are commonly prostrate but shrubs have been known to grow to two metres in height. Most of these species are poisonous and may cause issues for farmers and their stock. Answer: Bottlebrushes

Callistemon species belong to the Myrtle family and are endemic to Australia but cultivated elsewhere. They are called bottlebrushes because their vibrant cylindrical flowers look exactly like the brush with which you would clean a bottle or test tube. This question was brushed up neatly by Team Red member 1nn1.
10. A popular drink in Mexico, 'agua de jamaica' is a tea made from the flowers of which species of hibiscus?

Answer: Roselle

The scientific name for roselle is Hibiscus sabdariffa, and the plant most likely originated in West Africa. The name for its tea varies from region to region. It is 'rosella' in Australia, 'sorrel' or 'red sorrel' in the Caribbean, and 'zobo' or 'bissap' in certain West African countries.
