Once known as the "Sandwich Islands" because they were named after the Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, Hawaii is made up of eight major islands and officially became the 50th state in 1959.

One of only two islands in the Caribbean where two nations occupy the same island, Hispaniola was the first land that Christopher Columbus set foot on in what would be known as the West Indies. He landed on the island in 1492 and established the first European settlement there shortly after.
