Originally known as Cowford, the city was renamed "Jacksonville" in 1822, taking the name of Florida's first military governor and later US President, Andrew Jackson.

Lynyrd Skynyrd took their name from Leonard Skinner, a high school gym teacher notorious for strictly enforcing the grooming policy at Robert E. Although a mocking jibe initially, relations improved between the band and Mr. Skinner, to the point where he was paid to introduce them at a 1975 concert at the Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum. "The Great Fire of 1901" left more than 10,000 people homeless and ravaged 146 city blocks. It started as a kitchen fire in a mattress factory and later spread to envelop the city, resulting in seven deaths.
