Answer: East Sea

Most nations refer to the body of water bounded by Japan, Russia and the Korean Peninsula as the Sea of Japan. In 1992, South Korea began requesting that the international community consider calling the sea in question the East Sea. North Korea suggested calling it the Korean East Sea. Japan claims that the sea has been known as the Sea of Japan since the 19th century. South Korea claims that they were under Japanese rule during this time so the traditional Korean name was not considered.
