Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which famous London landmark marks the place of Tyburn Gallows, where London's public executions took place for over 450 years?

Answer: Marble Arch

These gallows, known as the Tyburn Tree, were where London's public executions took place for over 450 years, until around 1780 when public executions were moved to Newgate Prison. In total, 50,000 people lost their lives to the Tyburn Gallows and this often drew massive crowds.
2. When was the Tower of London built?

Answer: 11th century

The Tower of London is by far one of the most famous and well preserved historical buildings in the world. From its earliest structural beginnings by its founder William I of England, better known as William the Conqueror 1066-87, the Great Tower (or White Tower as it later came to be called) was fast becoming the most talked-about building in England.
3. When did the Fire of London occur?

Answer: 2nd September 1666

The fire started in the house and shop of Thomas Farynor, baker to King Charles II in Pudding Lane (the site of Farynor's house is marked today by the Monument). Farynor forgot to douse the fire in his oven on the previous night and embers set light to the nearby stacked firewood.
4. Which line of the underground is represented by the colour red?

Answer: Central

Victoria is pale blue, Bakerloo is brown, and the Jubilee is grey or silver.
5. What was the population of London in 1800?

Answer: 861,000

By 1800, spurred by the industrial revolution, London had reached a population of 861,000 and was the world's second largest city. The population in 2002 was well over seven million.
6. In which part of London did the infamous "Jack the Ripper" commit his crimes?

Answer: East London

There are five generally accepted (canonical) victims, and up to 13 more who are widely thought to be his victims.
7. Which of these has traditionally been "home" to London's street artists?

Answer: Covent Garden

Street entertainers, great restaurants, exciting bars and lively people make Covent Garden one of the most vibrant areas of the capital.
8. Which London station was involved in a devastating fire on Wednesday, 18th November 1987?

Answer: King's Cross

A discarded cigarette caused a major fire to break out at King's Cross underground station in November 1987. A station officer and thirty civilians lost their lives.
9. Where does a famous carnival take place each summer?

Answer: Notting Hill

As Europe's biggest street festival, the Notting Hill Carnival attracts over 1.5 million visitors.
10. What is London's largest Royal Park?

Answer: Richmond Park

London has been described as the greenest city in the world, and it's true that 30% of the capital is made up of green space. Originally known as the Manor of Sheen, Richmond Park began its royal association with King Edward who reigned from 1272 to 1302. Charles I used the park and Richmond Palace as refuge from the plague in London and established a population or red and fallow deer.

Famous Hyde Park is a London Royal Park which Henry VIII acquired in 1536 (it had been owned by the monks of Westminster Abbey before that). It has a large area of open space in the city centre of 630 acres and a perimeter of four miles.
