Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Lord Baden Powell hold the first scout camp?

Answer: Brownsea Island

The camp took place in 1907 on the largest of the eight islands in Poole Harbour. Long, Furzey and Green are three of the other islands in Poole Harbour.
2. Which animal related tourist attraction is in between Wool and Bere Regis?

Answer: Monkeyworld

Some of my favourite places to take my little girl - Putlake at Langton Matravers, Farmer Palmer's at Organford. The Otter and Owl Centre is in the New Forest over the border in Hampshire.

Monkeyworld is an Ape rescue centre, set up in 1987 to care for abused chimps and rehabilitate them.
3. Part of the beach between Shell Bay and Studland is used by nudists.

Answer: True

This part of the beach also forms part of the 630 mile South-West Coast Path, which runs from Shell Bay through Devon and Cornwall finishing at Minehead in Somerset. Don't let this stop you spending time on the rest of the gorgeous beach though.
4. "The Yettis" are a folk group from Dorset. Which village do they come from?

Answer: Yetminster

Yetminster is the only real place listed, the rest I've made up. The village itself is five miles from Sherborne and the River Wiggle runs through it.

"The Yetties" turned professional in 1967 and have therefore been in show business for over 40 years.
5. Which of these places could you not visit using the Swanage Railway?

Answer: Kingston

The line was originally closed in 1972 and the line removed, however local volunteers formed the Swanage Railway Trust have worked hard since to bring the line back into operation.

Services run between Swanage and Norden, although in 2002 the Swanage Railway was connected to the rest of the national rail network. The Railway Trust hopes eventually to restore services to Wareham, the nearest mainline station.
6. What is the name of the 'tied island' just south of Weymouth?

Answer: Isle of Portland

I would have called it a peninsula, however Wikipedia says "Portland is ... often incorrectly defined as a peninsula or a tombolo - it is technically a 'tied' island, while Chesil Beach is its tombolo"

This is perhaps more easily explained if you think of Chesil beach being a long rope that 'ties' the Isle of Portland to the rest of Dorset.
7. What is the nickname of AFC Bournemouth?

Answer: The Cherries

Cardiff City are the Bluebirds, Brighton and Hove Albion are The Seagulls and Blackpool are The Seasiders.

AFC Bournemouth has been around since 1899, but prior to 1971 they were called Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic.
8. Which hill in Shaftesbury is famous for being the site of the Hovis bread advert that was shown on television in the 1970s and 1980s?

Answer: Gold Hill

In 2006, The Hovis advert was voted as the UK's favourite advertisement of all time. It featured a boy pushing his bicycle up Gold Hill delivering bread with the music of Dvorak's New World Symphony playing in the background. The 1973 advert was directed by Ridley Scott - better known for Alien and Bladerunner!
9. How many "National Trust" places are there to visit in Dorset?

Answer: 9

They are : Brownsea Island, Clouds Hill, Corfe Castle, Hardy's Monument, Hardy's Cottage, Kingston Lacy, Max Gate, Studland Beach and Nature Reserve and White Mill.
10. What bird are you most likely to find in the village of Abbotsbury?

Answer: Swans

"Abbotsbury Swannery is unique. This is the only place in the world where you are able to walk through the heart of a colony of nesting Mute Swans."

Benedictine monks founded an Abbey at Abbotsbury in the early 11th century and they farmed swans for food. The monastery was destroyed in the 16th century, but the Swannery remains.
