Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the ruined castle in the Isle of Purbeck?

Answer: Corfe Castle

Corfe Castle was built in 978AD and stood for over 600 years. It was ruined in 1646AD by Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War when it was betrayed by a member of its own Garrison.
2. What is the county town of Dorset?

Answer: Dorchester

There is evidence of settlements around the Dorchester area dating back to prehistoric times. You can still see the remains of the walls built by the Romans when they were in Britain.
Dorchester became Dorset's county town in 1305 and is mentioned in Daniel Defoe's 18th century book "Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain"
3. What is the name of the natural limestone arch that sticks out into the sea near Lulworth?

Answer: Durdle Door

The Needles is a series of chalk stacks off the west of the Isle of Wight. Old Harry is situated between Swanage and Studland. St Alban's Head (or St Aldhem's Head) is a headland southwest of Swanage.

Along with Old Harry Rocks and St Alban's head, Durdle Door forms part of the World Heritage Site "The Jurassic Coast". Several musicians have recorded videos at Durdle Door including Sir Cliff Richard, Tears for Fears and Bruce Dickinson
4. Which motorway runs through Dorset?

Answer: None of Them

The motorways mentioned run through counties surrounding Dorset. The main trunk road into Dorset from the east is the A31, and the A35 from the West.
5. Does Dorset have an airport?

Answer: Yes

Yes - Bournemouth International (Hurn) Airport. Despite the name, the airport is actually in Christchurch, not Bournemouth. It was originally opened during World War II as RAF Hurn where it was used to prepare for the North African landings and D-Day.
6. Where is the Great Dorset Steam Fair held?

Answer: Tarrant Hinton

Tarrant Hinton (near Blandford Forum) hosts the Great Dorset Steam Fair each August.
The Fair has been running since 1968, showing off steam traction engines and tractors, however you can also see the show animals, ride on the funfair, try out home made food and cider or listen to live music.
7. Where in Dorset did Thomas Hardy call "Budmouth Regis"?

Answer: Weymouth

Budmouth Regis (Weymouth) is the principal location in "The Trumpet Major" but is mentioned in Thomas Hardy's other works as well.
One of Hardy's more famous books - "The Mayor of Casterbridge" is set just up the road in Dorchester.
8. Where is the headquarters of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution?

Answer: Poole

The RNLI was founded in March 1824, but was originally called "The National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck".
It's an essential rescue service for ships in distress in UK waters, yet it is funded solely from public donations and subscriptions.
9. Which county does not have a border with Dorset?

Answer: West Sussex

Devon borders Dorset to the West, Wiltshire and Somerset are to the North and Hampshire is to the East. West Sussex is the other side of Hampshire.
Dorset is smaller by area than any of its neighbours, although it does have a slightly larger population than Wiltshire. Maybe it has something to do with the beaches!
10. What is the "Cerne Abbas Giant"?

Answer: A naked man carved into a hillside

The giant is 55 metres (180 feet) tall, however there are no records of how it came into being and no mention of it before 1800.
The village of Cerne Abbas itself came into being because of the Benedictine Abbey situated nearby, however it's doubtful that the monks were involved in the creation of the giant!

Thanks for playing.
